{"id":410958,"date":"2026-01-16T13:43:11","date_gmt":"2026-01-16T13:43:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/410958\/"},"modified":"2026-01-16T13:43:11","modified_gmt":"2026-01-16T13:43:11","slug":"schemata-architects-creates-house-like-office-with-metal-awnings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/410958\/","title":{"rendered":"Schemata Architects creates house-like office with metal awnings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Local studio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/schemata-architecture-office\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Schemata Architects<\/a> drew on historic townhouses when creating this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/offices-architecture\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">office<\/a> along Japan&#8217;s T\u014dkaid\u014d road, which features a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/corrugated-metal\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">corrugated metal<\/a> facade with window shutters that open &#8220;as if breathing&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The office building is located in Fujisawa City on the historic T\u014dkaid\u014d road, which played a significant role during Japan&#8217;s Edo era.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2285884 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/uchida-shoten-office-schemata-architects_dezeen_2364_col_1-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Exterior of Uchida Sh\u014dten office\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1577\"  \/>Metal shutters open the office up to the street<\/p>\n<p>Drawing on this historic location, <a href=\"https:\/\/schemata.jp\/works\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Schemata Architects<\/a> looked to machiya \u2013 townhouses that were common during the Edo period \u2013 when creating the company building for hardware manufacturer Uchida Sh\u014dten.<\/p>\n<p>The 351-square-metre office, which replaces the company&#8217;s old headquarters, has a structure of laminated timber made from Scots pine, designed to withstand earthquakes.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2285888 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/uchida-shoten-office-schemata-architects_dezeen_2364_col_5-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Closed facade of Japanese office building\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1577\"  \/>Schemata Architects designed the head office to nod to traditional townhouses<\/p>\n<p>At 33 metres long, nine-and-a-half metres tall and just over six metres wide, its elongated shape was designed to resemble a historic machiya.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The width frontage is almost identical to that of a traditional townhouse,&#8221; Schemata Architects founder Jo Nagasaka told Dezeen.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The depth is longer than the existing building because the building coverage ratio is maximised at 60 per cent,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;The height is kept within the regulatory limit of 10 metres, but is taller than a traditional townhouse.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2285883 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/uchida-shoten-office-schemata-architects_dezeen_2364_col_0-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Shutter detail\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1577\"  \/>Its wooden interior can be seen from the outside<\/p>\n<p>While the building&#8217;s shape references historic structures, it has a modern look.<\/p>\n<p>Made from corrugated steel, its street-facing northern facade features rows of large shutters, opening the building up to passersby.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The awning windows on the north facade open onto the street as if breathing, allowing the presence of people to seep outwards,&#8221; Nagasaka said, which meant its external walls must meet fire-resistant standards, informing the decision to use steel plates for the exterior.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Within a design seeking contrast both internally and externally, we wished to position the external walls as the &#8216;hari&#8217; \u2013 stresses \u2013 and the equipment, such as gutters and PVC pipes, as the &#8216;meri&#8217; \u2013 reliefs,&#8221; Nagasaka explained.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/09\/30\/schemata-architects-ironworks-cafe-teshima-factory\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/schemata-architects-teshima-factory_dezeen_2364_col_sq2-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"People outside Teshima Factory in Japan\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"  \/><\/p>\n<p> Schemata Architects turns ironworks on former &#8220;garbage island&#8221; into cafe and brewery\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We selected steel sheet as the &#8216;hari&#8217; material, further opting for corrugated sheets,&#8221; he continued.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This minimises the visibility of horizontal joints and, due to its high drainage capacity, eliminates the need for drip edges, allowing the &#8216;hari&#8217; expression to be maintained.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2285893 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/uchida-shoten-office-schemata-architects_dezeen_2364_col_10-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Interior of Uchida Sh\u014dten office\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1577\"  \/>Wood and metal contrast in the interior<\/p>\n<p>Inside the head office, the pine wood was left in its natural colour, which gives the interior a warm feel and creates a striking contrast against the corrugated-steel exterior when the shutters are open.<\/p>\n<p>A spiral staircase connects the building&#8217;s two main floors, ending in its low-ceilinged and fully wood-clad attic space.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2285901 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/uchida-shoten-office-schemata-architects_dezeen_2364_col_18-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"People working in Japanese office\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1577\"  \/>Schemata Architects designed the space for hardware company Uchida Sh\u014dten<\/p>\n<p>As a hardware manufacturer, Uchida Sh\u014dten crafted the building&#8217;s internal spiral staircase, a folded staircase and a south-facing balcony.<\/p>\n<p>As well as workspaces, the company headquarters has a dedicated artist-in-residence area for makers and creators, ranging from students to professionals, at the front of the building.<\/p>\n<p>It features facilities such as a sink and bathroom, and has access to the attic, where people can stay.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2285896 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/uchida-shoten-office-schemata-architects_dezeen_2364_col_13-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"A sink inside office by Schemata Architects\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1577\"  \/>An artist-in-residence space has its own sink<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Uchida Sh\u014dten is fundamentally a manufacturing company,&#8221; Nagasaka explained. &#8220;As the company grew and expanded, with the factory becoming separate, the tangible sense of craftsmanship at hand diminished,&#8221; he continued.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To ensure this spirit of making was not forgotten, and to preserve that culture nearby, the vacant space placed at the front of the deep plot characteristic of a machiya townhouse has been transformed into an artist-in-residence facility.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2285899 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/uchida-shoten-office-schemata-architects_dezeen_2364_col_16-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Wood-clad attic\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1577\"  \/>The attic is fully wood-clad<\/p>\n<p>Nagasaka hopes that the addition of the artist-in-residence space at the front will encourage interaction in the neighbourhood and inform the evolution of the building.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The intention is that the presence of those working there, seeping out through the fittings, will create a breathing architecture that stimulates neighbours and sparks communication,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Though newly built, the completion of the structure is not the end.
