{"id":412002,"date":"2026-01-17T01:40:10","date_gmt":"2026-01-17T01:40:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/412002\/"},"modified":"2026-01-17T01:40:10","modified_gmt":"2026-01-17T01:40:10","slug":"year-round-coyote-hunting-rules-finalized-by-natural-resources-commission-910news-com","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/412002\/","title":{"rendered":"Year-round coyote hunting rules finalized by Natural Resources Commission \u2013 910News.com"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-7zszsu-0 ggPTvK body-paragraph\">LANSING \u2014 A years-long dispute over Michigan\u2019s coyote hunting season could be finally coming to a close.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-7zszsu-0 ggPTvK body-paragraph\">The Natural Resources Commission voted this week to establish <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/dnr\/-\/media\/Project\/Websites\/dnr\/Documents\/Boards\/NRC\/2026\/January-2026\/Signed_10WCO2025_FORACTION_FINAL_edited.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/dnr\/-\/media\/Project\/Websites\/dnr\/Documents\/Boards\/NRC\/2026\/January-2026\/Signed_10WCO2025_FORACTION_FINAL_edited.pdf\">two new coyote seasons<\/a> that span the entire year, likely putting to rest a pushback from Michigan hunters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-7zszsu-0 ggPTvK body-paragraph\">A standard hunting season will take place from Oct. 15 to March 1, while a management season will span through the warmer months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-7zszsu-0 ggPTvK body-paragraph\">Those seasons allow coyotes to be hunted under different circumstances \u2014 the hunting season is for recreation and the management season is a method of population control.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-7zszsu-0 ggPTvK body-paragraph\">\u201dWe just want to balance the wildlife, the effect coyotes have on wildlife, and that\u2019s the biggest issue right there,\u201d said Gary Gorniak, president of the Straits Area Sportsmen\u2019s Club. \u201cWe don\u2019t want to wipe out the coyotes \u2014 we want to manage them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-7zszsu-0 ggPTvK body-paragraph\">Gorniak argues that managing coyote populations through hunting is more humane than natural factors, like starvation or disease.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-7zszsu-0 ggPTvK body-paragraph\">Coyote hunting is currently allowed nine months out of the year, with a break from April to July.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-7zszsu-0 ggPTvK body-paragraph\">That change was adopted in 2024 and was supported by animal rights groups, who argued that summer hunting could endanger young coyotes who may lose their parent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-7zszsu-0 ggPTvK body-paragraph\">Some conservation groups sued the NRC over the original coyote hunting change, arguing that the policy wasn\u2019t based on scientific evidence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-7zszsu-0 ggPTvK body-paragraph\">Hunter groups now say they\u2019re satisfied with these new rules.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-7zszsu-0 ggPTvK body-paragraph\">\u201cWe should be able to just move forward with this and and have sound management,\u201d said Merle Jones, a spokesperson for the Michigan Trappers and Predator Callers Association. \u201cIt provides the tools to deal with those issues at a targeted location in a timely manner, and it also gives the tools for us to continually manage the overabundance on a statewide basis.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"LANSING \u2014 A years-long dispute over Michigan\u2019s coyote hunting season could be finally coming to a close.
