{"id":412377,"date":"2026-01-17T06:11:09","date_gmt":"2026-01-17T06:11:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/412377\/"},"modified":"2026-01-17T06:11:09","modified_gmt":"2026-01-17T06:11:09","slug":"many-women-and-doctors-dismiss-trumps-tylenol-claim-as-more-research-suggests-no-autism-link-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/412377\/","title":{"rendered":"Many women and doctors dismiss Trump\u2019s Tylenol claim as more research suggests no autism link"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkhblefa001y26qfg5rca0ax@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When President Donald Trump claimed last year that taking <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/09\/22\/health\/trump-autism-announcement-cause-tylenol\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tylenol during pregnancy<\/a> can be linked with an increased risk of autism, ob-gyn Dr. Nathaniel DeNicola\u2019s office had an influx of questions and confusion \u2013 but only for a few days.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkhboons000d3b6p8c540x5d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThen, after a week, it had kind of gone away as a hot-button topic,\u201d said DeNicola, based in Newport Beach, California, who helped author the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acog.org\/clinical\/clinical-guidance\/practice-advisory\/articles\/2025\/09\/acetaminophen-use-in-pregnancy-and-neurodevelopmental-outcomes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists\u2019<\/a> guidance on the use of acetaminophen in pregnancy.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkhboons000e3b6p3uelq513@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            At the time, the scientific medical community \u201cwas so prompt in its response and so definitive in its assertion of the utility and safety of Tylenol during pregnancy as needed, I don\u2019t think there was any lasting confusion, at least from those who listen to the medical experts,\u201d DeNicola said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkhboons000f3b6pgccsryqd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cPatients, I think correctly, are going to their doctors,\u201d he added. \u201cThe public seems to have taken the direction from the experts, that they trust their voice on this.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkhboons000g3b6p3qwec92z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Chicago-based maternal-fetal medicine physician Dr. Lynn Yee said that fewer of her patients seem worried about Tylenol now than in the fall.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkhboons000h3b6pqzgygmvj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIn September, October, November, there was quite a bit of public concern and attention on this topic, and now, in January, I feel like things are changing and that I have fewer patients asking me about Tylenol or acetaminophen,\u201d said Yee, chief of maternal-fetal medicine in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkhboons000i3b6p71bdlvhz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI\u2019m really proud of our professional organizations like American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine. They\u2019ve done a lot of messaging around the safety of acetaminophen and \u2018talk to your doctor,\u2019\u201d she said. \u201cAll these trusted organizations have been doing a commendable job of getting the right messages out there, and maybe it\u2019s working.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkhboons000j3b6p565s2q2t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Experts stress that autism has many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niehs.nih.gov\/health\/topics\/conditions\/autism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">potential causes<\/a> \u2013 including genetics, advanced parental age, and prenatal exposure to air pollution or certain pesticides \u2013 and that the science linking it to acetaminophen remains far from settled.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkhboons000k3b6pshxfle1c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In guidance released after Trump\u2019s claims in September, ACOG reaffirmed that \u201cacetaminophen remains the analgesic and antipyretic of choice during pregnancy. Judicious use at the lowest effective dose for the shortest necessary duration, in consultation with an obstetrician\u2013gynecologist or other obstetric care professional, remains consistent with best practice.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkhboons000l3b6pedjnx7gm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Acetaminophen, also known as paracetamol and sold under the brand name Tylenol, is widely considered the only safe over-the-counter option for treating pain or fever during pregnancy. Leaving a fever untreated can be dangerous for both the fetus and the mother, experts warn, increasing the risk of miscarriage, birth defects, high blood pressure and <a href=\"https:\/\/nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Furldefense.com%2Fv3%2F__https%3A%2F%2Fpubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov%2F34537069%2F__%3B!!Dq0X2DkFhyF93HkjWTBQKhk!TBk4QjdVPn6_OnGtJz0Nge9INaAOrTVhWaieOuwb0Vt-ubO_pj2_WK8Vj5IkK4U4b0y5l1zWgLWdAUL-AV764jzZAT5y11Do%24&amp;data=05%7C02%7Cjacqueline.howard%40cnn.com%7Cb349c5040e89417b19c608de5477e74a%7C0eb48825e8714459bc72d0ecd68f1f39%7C0%7C0%7C639041071156953605%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=giwS6ci%2FNGe4C30nJGjNnV0gxrshgifHdOyxjl9ZjuQ%3D&amp;reserved=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">neurodevelopmental disorders<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkhboons000n3b6pt3yz7g07@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cUntreated fevers can have short- and long-term impacts on fetal neurodevelopment,\u201d Yee said. \u201cIt\u2019s really important to treat your fever, because we know that untreated fever during pregnancy is unhealthy for both the mom and the baby. \u2026 And we don\u2019t have better, safe alternatives for reducing fevers during pregnancy.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkhboons000o3b6p3r602f6a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It\u2019s estimated that <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/25369643\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">about 65% of pregnant women<\/a> use acetaminophen at some point during pregnancy.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkhboons000q3b6parqzqh5o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The White House released a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/articles\/2025\/09\/fact-evidence-suggests-link-between-acetaminophen-autism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">fact sheet<\/a> in September referencing various studies suggesting that acetaminophen use during pregnancy, especially late in pregnancy, may cause long-term neurological effects in children, such as autism or ADHD.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkhboons000r3b6p594g4gqr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            At the time, the US Food and Drug Administration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/media\/188843\/download?attachment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">issued a letter to physicians<\/a> stating that \u201cclinicians should consider minimizing the use of acetaminophen during pregnancy for routine low-grade fevers\u201d and that in recent years, \u201cevidence has accumulated suggesting that the use of acetaminophen by pregnant women may be associated with an increased risk of neurological conditions such as autism and ADHD in children.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkhboons000s3b6pexe62oqa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            One of the papers that the Trump administration referenced was an analysis of 46 previous studies. That review, published in August in the journal <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1186\/s12940-025-01208-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">BMC Environmental Health<\/a>, found evidence of a link between acetaminophen exposure during pregnancy and an increased incidence of neurodevelopmental disorders.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkhboons000t3b6p3yo5r6gw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThis association is strongest when acetaminophen is taken for four weeks or longer,\u201d the paper\u2019s senior author, Dr. <a href=\"https:\/\/hsph.harvard.edu\/profile\/andrea-baccarelli\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Andrea Baccarelli<\/a>, dean of the faculty at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and professor of environmental health, said in a statement in September.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkhboons000u3b6ppw850vhe@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <a href=\"https:\/\/hsph.harvard.edu\/news\/using-acetaminophen-during-pregnancy-may-increase-childrens-autism-and-adhd-risk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Baccarelli said he had discussed his research<\/a> with US Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. in the weeks leading up to the White House\u2019s announcement.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkhboons000v3b6pt0w4h2go@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cAt the same time, as the only approved medication for pain and fever reduction during pregnancy, acetaminophen remains an important tool for pregnant patients and their physicians. High fever can pose risks to both the mother and the fetus, including neural tube defects and preterm birth,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkhboons000w3b6pn20igc99@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cAfter assessing the evidence, my colleagues and I recommended a balanced approach based on the precautionary principle: Patients who need fever or pain reduction during pregnancy should take the lowest effective dose of acetaminophen, for the shortest possible duration, after consultation with their physician about their individual risk-benefit calculation.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkhboont000x3b6pzikvgjhs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Now, new research is adding to the discourse.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkhboont000y3b6prhshknkb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A paper published Friday found no indication that children born to mothers who used acetaminophen during pregnancy have an increased likelihood of autism.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkhboont000z3b6p44uhz3eh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The research, published in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lanogw\/article\/PIIS3050-5038(25)00211-0\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The Lancet Obstetrics, Gynaecology &amp; Women\u2019s Health<\/a>, reviewed 43 published studies on prenatal acetaminophen exposure and potential links with child neurodevelopment, including data on more than 300,000 pregnancies. Of those studies, 17 were included in a meta-analysis.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkhboont00103b6poyp10wd5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe looked at a number of outcomes, including autism, ADHD and intellectual disability,\u201d lead author Dr. Asma Khalil, consultant obstetrician and fetal medicine specialist at St George\u2019s Hospital in London, said in a news briefing.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkhboont00113b6pxc6rmbkc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The researchers found no evidence that acetaminophen use during pregnancy increases the risk of autism, attention-deficit\/hyperactivity disorder or intellectual disability among children.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkhboont00123b6p2t6dkutt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The US Department of Health and Human Services said in a statement that the new paper does not resolve questions around Tylenol\u2019s potential risks and excludes the majority of studies on the topic.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkhboont00133b6pbtxml85z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In response, Khalil said in an email that the review paper \u201cdoes not exclude evidence\u201d but rather systematically evaluated all studies and gave greater weight to the ones \u201cbest able to address bias and confounding\u201d factors.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkhboont00143b6pbgb1axpv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWhile we acknowledge that even small effects can matter at a population level, public health guidance must be grounded in the strongest available evidence, not in signals driven by bias or confounding by indication,\u201d she wrote. \u201cThis review provides reassurance rather than alarm, and it supports current clinical guidance that paracetamol remains an appropriate first-line treatment for pain and fever in pregnancy when used as recommended.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkhboont00153b6prs6qdlrj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Some of the studies in the new analysis included data on siblings, in which the mother may have used acetaminophen while pregnant with one child but not the other.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkhboont00163b6p51uc2716@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cSibling-comparison meta-analyses represent the primary evidence, since they account for shared familial and genetic factors,\u201d the researchers wrote in their paper.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkhboont00173b6p903vve70@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Prioritizing these sibling studies was a strength of the new research, Dr. Steven Kapp, a senior lecturer in psychology at the University of Portsmouth who was not involved in the new study, said in a statement distributed by the UK-based Science Media Centre.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkhboont00183b6p769nuw76@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIts scientific rigour included accounting for cofounders such as having a sibling with the condition, as these neurodivergences run in families. Parents of disabled children might be more likely to take paracetamol because of pains related to parenting stress or their own chronic conditions,\u201d Kapp said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmkhboont00193b6pntlche4d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe sibling control in these studies shows that the medication does not cause their child\u2019s disability.
