{"id":412683,"date":"2026-01-17T09:53:09","date_gmt":"2026-01-17T09:53:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/412683\/"},"modified":"2026-01-17T09:53:09","modified_gmt":"2026-01-17T09:53:09","slug":"kyrgios-sick-if-he-and-kokkinakis-win-australian-open-doubles-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/412683\/","title":{"rendered":"Kyrgios: &#8216;Sick&#8217; if he and Kokkinakis win Australian Open doubles again"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jan 16, 2026, 08:10 PM ET<\/p>\n<p>Declaring tennis partner <a data-player-guid=\"0da296e6-d677-0203-7c81-7c51d51d71e4\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports\/tennis\/players\/profile?playerId=2320\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Thanasi Kokkinakis<\/a> fit, <a data-player-guid=\"38b6e398-769b-e1cd-aeb5-5f2ea7a815b1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports\/tennis\/players\/profile?playerId=1984\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nick Kyrgios<\/a> says the &#8216;Special Ks&#8217; are locked in to making waves again in the men&#8217;s doubles at the Australian Open.<\/p>\n<p>Kokkinakis&#8217;s hotly anticipated return to singles action was short-lived, withdrawing from the Open after being forced to pull out of the Adelaide International earlier this week.<\/p>\n<p>The 29-year-old had played through pain during a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/tennis\/story\/_\/id\/47593498\/australia-thanasi-kokkinakis-injury-flares-wins-singles-comeback\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">three-set win<\/a> over American <a data-player-guid=\"ffb0719a-6f9f-d8d6-0a61-f9a27f893501\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports\/tennis\/players\/profile?playerId=3368\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sebastian Korda<\/a> in the first round in Adelaide &#8212; his first match after nearly 12 months following pectoral surgery in February 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Feeling underdone himself, Kyrgios has also withdrawn from the men&#8217;s singles at Melbourne Park.<\/p>\n<p>The 30-year-old, who reached the 2022 Wimbledon final, has played just seven singles tour matches over the past three years following multiple wrist and knee surgeries.<\/p>\n<p>But Kyrgios, giving assurances that Kokkinakis is ready to go, is out to go all in for more doubles success.<\/p>\n<p>The box-office duo famously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/tennis\/story\/_\/id\/33172017\/australian-open-2022-nick-kyrgios-thanasi-kokkinakis-claim-men-australian-open-doubles-title\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">won the men&#8217;s doubles at Melbourne Park in 2022<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He told me he&#8217;s definitely going to play,&#8221; Kyrgios said.<\/p>\n<p>Editor&#8217;s Picks<\/p>\n<p>2 Related<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I just feel for him. Obviously, he had to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/tennis\/story\/_\/id\/47604320\/injured-australian-drawcard-thanasi-kokkinakis-major-doubt-open\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">pull out of his singles<\/a>, but at this point in our careers I think we&#8217;re just grateful to be out here.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If we can make waves again in the doubles world, I think it&#8217;ll be pretty sick.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I did tell Thanasi, like, it would be sick if we ran it back.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s a long way to go, but if we&#8217;re able to do it again, what we did in 2022, it might be crazy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Kyrgios and Kokkinakis were dogged by injury at last year&#8217;s Australian Open, retiring midway through their first-round encounter with fellow Australians <a data-player-guid=\"cd9ba86b-c611-51a5-7396-2cce4ff52ce1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports\/tennis\/players\/profile?playerId=1857\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">James Duckworth<\/a> and <a data-player-guid=\"e1a2cbb8-23df-f669-91d6-43fbb0e35296\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports\/tennis\/players\/profile?playerId=3471\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Aleksandar Vukic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The fan-favourite pairing took to the court together at the Brisbane International last week, reaching the final 16 before an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/tennis\/story\/_\/id\/47543305\/tennis-special-ks-nick-kyrgios-thanasi-kokkinakis-defeated-doubles-brisbane-international\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">entertaining 6-0 1-6 10-6 match tiebreak loss<\/a> to No.6 seeds <a data-player-guid=\"a7a77a96-490b-1f89-9d05-6b867d6cd27f\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports\/tennis\/players\/profile?playerId=3601\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sadio Doumbia<\/a> and <a data-player-guid=\"910681d7-8fe3-d813-03f7-779816dff0e1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports\/tennis\/players\/profile?playerId=3687\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Fabien Reboul<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Obviously, there&#8217;s going to be some high expectations [at the Australian Open], but the one thing that people can expect is we&#8217;re going to have fun,&#8221; Kokkinakis said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re going to be energetic, and we&#8217;re going to give it our all.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I can&#8217;t guarantee a win like last time, but he&#8217;s [Kyrgios] a character and it&#8217;s always going to be fun going out there and playing with him.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ll get the crowd up and about.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>After beating Chinese veteran <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/tennis\/player\/_\/id\/3024\/zhizhen-zhang\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Zhizhen Zhang<\/a> in a super tiebreaker at the Kooyong Classic, Kyrgios is targeting Wimbledon for his return to grand slam tennis.<\/p>\n<p>He got more singles action after taking on fellow Australian <a data-player-guid=\"59e7e630-cbbe-b092-10d4-037ee43ca658\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/sports\/tennis\/players\/profile?playerId=2244\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jordan Thompson<\/a> at Red Bull BassLine, a promotional event that featured a courtside DJ.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Look, when me and Thanasi play, we&#8217;ve got this [Rod Laver Arena] place rocking, so it&#8217;ll be similar vibes,&#8221;
