In a viral video, which has amassed 1.7 million views, he began by saying that they kicked him out for wearing \u201cvibrant five fingers\u201d to the gym because, purportedly, they don\u2019t count as sneakers.<\/p>\n
However, @nurseontwos pointed out that he had been going to Planet Fitness gyms for 20 years, wearing the same shoes. He notes that it had never been a problem until now.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve never had a problem,\u201d he reiterates. \u201cBut apparently they\u2019re looking at the cameras now for once, and they see my sneakers, and they say that it\u2019s a safety risk, a safety hazard.\u201d<\/p>\n
According to the Planet Fitness worker, the reason for this is that the shoes aren\u2019t closed toe. Though the TikToker points out that the shoes have enclosed toes.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo I\u2019m not sure what the problem is,\u201d he continues. \u201cI\u2019ve been wearing these sneakers for most of my life, most of my adult life\u2014well over 20 years\u2014I\u2019ve never had an injury in them.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd in fact, wearing regular sneakers for me is a bit of a problem,\u201d he adds. \u201cSo I understand that places have rules, but five fingers are meant to be a fitness sneaker, a running sneaker, and this is meant to be a gym where I should be able to do my fitness and my running.\u201d<\/p>\n
What Does Planet Fitness Say?<\/p>\n
On its website, the Vibram FiveFinger shoes are branded as a \u201clightweight and breathable minimalist five toe shoes with a durable Vibram outsole.\u201d The website features a whole gym line. However, Planet Fitness\u2014or at least the specific worker who gave the TikToker the boot\u2014may not deem them as appropriate athletic footwear.<\/p>\n
According to the Planet Fitness website<\/a>, \u201cathletic footwear must be worn at all times.\u201d The site then notes that \u201copen-toed shoes or sandals pose a safety hazard for members working out.\u201d<\/p>\nSo, while the gym doesn\u2019t technically ban five-finger sneakers, we can assume that Planet Fitness considers them a safety hazard. More broadly, the site says that \u201cclothing that may present health or safety hazards or damage club equipment is not allowed.\u201d<\/p>\n
Viewers Are Split<\/p>\n
In the comments, viewers seemed to support both sides. One commenter said, \u201cI\u2019ll never understand why a business would have to tell a grown man how to properly dress when that\u2019s none of their business.\u201d Another quipped, \u201cI thought this was a judgement free zone.\u201d A third opined, \u201cYour feet are covered I don\u2019t see the problem.\u201d<\/p>\n
Elsewhere, other viewers seemed to take the gym\u2019s side. \u201cIt\u2019s no different than going to a facility that requires steel toed boots,\u201d one wrote. \u201cI don\u2019t whine and post a video because I want to wear my Vans. I wear what they require.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWell maybe because it\u2019s more likely of you getting an injury wearing 5 finger shoes as to wearing regular tennis shoes,\u201d another added. A third said this prompted them to look up the shoe. \u201cI haven\u2019t seen anyone wear those type to the gym,\u201d they said. \u201cImagine if you drop a heavy dumbbell damn. They doing you a favor saving your toes my boy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Vibram, @nurseontwos, and Planet Fitness didn\u2019t immediately respond to BroBible\u2019s request for comment.<\/p>\n
