A widespread bank shutdown is coming up across the United States. On Monday, Jan. 19, all branches of major U.S. banks will be closed for 24 hours in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day<\/a>, a federal holiday.<\/p>\n

The closure affects leading financial institutions such as Bank of America, Chase, Citibank and Wells Fargo, among many others. Branch lobbies and in-person services will be unavailable for the day, with normal operations resuming on the next business day.<\/p>\n

These banks will be closed Jan. 19<\/p>\n

The list of banks closing their branches on MLK Day includes most major U.S. financial institutions, including:<\/p>\n

Bank of America<\/a>; Wells Fargo; Chase; Goldman Sachs; Citibank; U.S. Bank; SunTrust Bank; Morgan Stanley; Truist Bank; PNC Bank; Capital One; Citizens Bank; Santander Bank; and Compass Bank.<\/p>\n

Because banks follow the Federal Reserve holiday calendar, closures are broadly consistent across the industry.<\/p>\n

What banking services will still be available<\/p>\n

While physical branches will be closed, customers will still be able to access most services through online banking, mobile apps and ATMs. Everyday transactions such as checking balances, transferring funds and depositing checks via mobile apps typically remain available.<\/p>\n

However, customers should be aware that transactions scheduled on a federal holiday may not be processed until the bank reopens on the following business day. This can affect bill payments, wire transfers and other time-sensitive transactions.<\/p>\n

All federal holidays when banks close<\/p>\n

From New Year\u2019s Day in January through Christmas Day in December, U.S. banks observe all 11 federal holidays recognized by the federal government. Some holidays fall on fixed dates each year, while others change annually.<\/p>\n

When a federal holiday falls on a weekend, it is usually observed on a nearby weekday. If the holiday falls on a Saturday, it is typically observed on Friday. If it falls on a Sunday, it is observed on the following Monday.<\/p>\n

Below are the federal holidays<\/a> in 2026 when banks across the United States will be closed all day:<\/p>\n
