\n\tMatt Damon<\/a> and Ben Affleck<\/a> recently appeared on the \u201cJoe Rogan Experience<\/a>\u201d to promote their new Netflix<\/a> film \u201cThe Rip<\/a>,\u201d and the long-time friends and collaborators shared their thoughts on how the streamer is changing the way movies are made. <\/p>\n

\n\tDamon pointed out that because viewers give a \u201cvery different level of attention\u201d to a movie at home versus in a theater, Netflix wants to push the action set pieces toward the front of the runtime. He also said there are behind-the-scenes discussions about reiterating \u201cthe plot three or four times in the dialogue\u201d to account for people being on their phones.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe standard way to make an action movie that we learned was, you usually have three set pieces. One in the first act, one in the second, one in the third,\u201d Damon explained. \u201cYou spend most of your money on that one in the third act. That\u2019s your finale. And now they\u2019re like, \u2018Can we get a big one in the first five minutes? We want people to stay. And it wouldn\u2019t be terrible if you reiterated the plot three or four times in the dialogue because people are on their phones while they\u2019re watching.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAffleck then cut in, adding that the streamer formula for successful content isn\u2019t the only way. He used Netflix\u2019s recent limited series hit \u201cAdolescence\u201d as a shining example.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cBut then you look at \u2018Adolescence,\u2019 and it didn\u2019t do any of that shit,\u201d Affleck said. \u201cAnd it\u2019s fucking great. And it\u2019s dark too. It\u2019s tragic and intense. [It\u2019s about] this guy who finds out his kid is accused of murder. There are long shots of the back of their heads. They get in the car, nobody says anything.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWhile Damon thought shows like \u201cAdolescence\u201d are \u201cthe exception,\u201d Affleck said he felt the show \u201cdemonstrates you don\u2019t have to do\u201d the Netflix tricks to please audiences.<\/p>\n
