Linux 6.16 now greets the world with various performance improvements, NVIDIA Hopper and Blackwell open-source GPU driver support in Nouveau, Intel Advanced Performance Extensions (APX) preparations, and many other exciting enhancements.<\/p>\n<p>Linux 6.16 is a great kernel update for the summer of 2025. I&#8217;ve already covered the Linux 6.16 highlights at length within the feature overview article of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phoronix.com\/review\/linux-616-features\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Linux 6.16 Features From NVIDIA Blackwell To Performance Improvements &amp; Intel APX<\/a> and then the short summary in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phoronix.com\/news\/Linux-6.16-Features-Reminder\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Linux 6.16 Is Exciting For Open-Source NVIDIA, OpenVPN DCO &amp; More Performance<\/a>. Lots of great work as always. The Linux 6.16 source tree weighs in at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phoronix.com\/news\/Linux-6.16-AMDGPU-Driver-Size\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">38.4 million lines<\/a> in its source tree across 78.4k files, as measured by the cloc tool.&#13;\n<\/p>\n<p>Linux 6.16 is available from <a href=\"https:\/\/git.kernel.org\/pub\/scm\/linux\/kernel\/git\/torvalds\/linux.git\/commit\/?id=038d61fd642278bab63ee8ef722c50d10ab01e8f\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">git.kernel.org<\/a>.&#13;<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/1753665429_14_image\" alt=\"Linux v6.16 Git tag\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Now it&#8217;s onward to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phoronix.com\/search\/Linux+6.17\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Linux 6.17<\/a> merge cycle of which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phoronix.com\/news\/Linux-6.17-Early-Features\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">there are many changes already on tap<\/a>. Linux 6.17 will be particularly prominent as with its early October debut is anticipated to be the kernel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phoronix.com\/news\/Ubuntu-25.10-With-Linux-6.17\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">powering Ubuntu 25.10<\/a> and should be the out-of-the-box kernel for Fedora 43 and other late 2025 Linux distribution releases.<\/p>\n<p>Update: Linus Torvalds has now posted his <a href=\"https:\/\/lore.kernel.org\/lkml\/CAHk-=wh0kuQE+tWMEPJqCR48F4Tip2EeYQU-mi+2Fx_Oa1Ehbw@mail.gmail.com\/T\/#u\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">release announcement<\/a>. &#8220;Last&#13;<br \/>\nweek was nice and calm, and there were no big show-stopper surprises&#13;<br \/>\nto keep us from the regular schedule, so I&#8217;ve tagged and pushed out&#13;<br \/>\n6.16 as planned.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"As anticipated the Linux 6.16 kernel was promoted to stable.
