An economist has warned Ireland “risks the mother of all recessions” if Donald Trump wins his battle to lower interest rates.<\/p>\n

The US pres\u00adid\u00adent has been engaged in a battle to sharply reduce interest rates with the chair of the US cent\u00adral bank, Jerome Pow\u00adell.<\/p>\n

Speaking in the Sunday Independent<\/a>, Dr Alan Ahearne said if Trump was successful, he out\u00adcome would be worse than any\u00adthing exper\u00adi\u00adenced in the last eco\u00adnomic down\u00adturn.<\/p>\n

“Stock mar\u00adkets would fall, credit mar\u00adkets would tighten up, just like in 2008. Bor\u00adrow\u00ading and lend\u00ading would freeze.<\/p>\n

“This is huge,\u201d he added. \u201cIf you get a panic in the US bond mar\u00adket, it will for cer\u00adtain cause a deep reces\u00adsion in the US and a deep reces\u00adsion all over the world.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe main impact on us will be a global eco\u00adnomy in reces\u00adsion, and that\u2019s going to affect eco\u00adnomic growth and it will push the Irish eco\u00adnomy into reces\u00adsion.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump has made it very clear that he is no fan of Fed chief Jerome Powell who is due to step down from his post in May<\/p>\n

Powell has publicly pushed back and warned that the independence of the Fed is at stake, and senior central bank figures from around the world have also expressed their support for Powell.<\/p>\n

Writing in the Irish Times<\/a> on Saturday, David McWilliams said: “Donald Trump doesn\u2019t want to debase money completely, just a little bit, just enough to keep the price of money \u2013 the rate of interest \u2013 artificially low, to stimulate more money printing, just enough to fool the people for long enough into thinking they are richer than they actually are.<\/p>\n
