{"id":416782,"date":"2026-01-19T14:27:13","date_gmt":"2026-01-19T14:27:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/416782\/"},"modified":"2026-01-19T14:27:13","modified_gmt":"2026-01-19T14:27:13","slug":"jonathan-woodgates-reaction-to-manchester-uniteds-win-really-is-one-of-the-strangest-sights-of-derby-weekend","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/416782\/","title":{"rendered":"Jonathan Woodgate&#8217;s reaction to Manchester United&#8217;s win really is one of the strangest sights of derby weekend"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Manchester United\u2019s new coaching staff is an odd mix, featuring Jonathan Woodgate.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unitedinfocus.com\/news\/jason-wilcox-explains-why-manchester-united-have-appointed-michael-carrick-as-head-coach\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Michael Carrick\u2019s appointment<\/a> was hastily put together by Manchester United after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unitedinfocus.com\/news\/david-ornstein-confirms-ruben-amorim-sacked-as-manchester-united-manager-names-interim-until-end-of-season\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sacking Ruben Amorim<\/a> at the start of the year.<\/p>\n<p>And yet the combination of Jonny Evans, Travis Binnion, Steve Cooper and Jonathan Woodgate appear to have stuck gold, one game in.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unitedinfocus.com\/club\/coaching-staff\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Carrick\u2019s coaching team<\/a> were able to put together a tactical masterclass that exposed Manchester City with a 2-0 win that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unitedinfocus.com\/opinion\/i-want-to-live-in-the-moment-and-rewatch-uniteds-win-it-should-have-been-6-0-and-my-verdict-on-every-player\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">felt more like a 6-0 performance<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And amid the chaos, we saw the bizarre sight of Jonathan Woodgate losing his mind celebrating a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unitedinfocus.com\/match-coverage\/man-utd-ratings-vs-city-bruno-fernandes-masterclass-but-unstoppable-9-10-star-is-now-reborn\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Manchester United victory<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/GettyImages-2256131007-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Jonathan Woodgate celebrates\" \/>Photo by Robbie Jay Barratt \u2013 AMA\/Getty ImagesJonathan Woodgate celebrates like a fan<\/p>\n<p>Jonathan Woodgate wearing a Manchester United jacket just looks odd. <\/p>\n<p>He was a Leeds United trainee when he broke through as a footballer, representing the good and the bad of their talented team in the late 1990s and early 2000s.<\/p>\n<p>He later had spells at Real Madrid, Newcastle and Tottenham, in a career plagued by injuries.<\/p>\n<p>Football can be a strange game and fan rivalries have to be set aside \u2013 just ask his former Leeds teammate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unitedinfocus.com\/throwbacks\/how-a-transfer-to-man-utd-saw-alan-smith-go-from-leeds-hero-to-judas\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alan Smith who swapped Leeds for Manchester United in 2004<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Woodgate must have felt a little odd himself walking through the doors at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unitedinfocus.com\/club\/training-ground\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Carrington<\/a> for his first day, for this very different role as assistant manager.<\/p>\n<p>But if there were any doubts about his passion and commitment, they are gone now, looking at his passionate reaction to Manchester United\u2019s win over City.<\/p>\n<p>Woodgate was seen in the stands with his fists pumped, eyes bulging, swept up in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unitedinfocus.com\/club\/stadium\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Old Trafford<\/a> joy.<\/p>\n<p>It was a sight we never expected to see.<\/p>\n<p>And it shows that for this short spell, Carrick\u2019s coaching team are \u2018all in\u2019 on making their stint at Manchester United a total success.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/GettyImages-2256130758-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Jonathan Woodgate celebrates\" \/>Photo by Robbie Jay Barratt \u2013 AMA\/Getty Images          Who are you backing in Paul Scholes and Lisandro Martinez\u2019s war of words?
