{"id":416917,"date":"2026-01-19T15:58:09","date_gmt":"2026-01-19T15:58:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/416917\/"},"modified":"2026-01-19T15:58:09","modified_gmt":"2026-01-19T15:58:09","slug":"stan-wawrinka-rallies-into-australian-open-r2-atp-tour","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/416917\/","title":{"rendered":"Stan Wawrinka rallies into Australian Open R2 | ATP Tour"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>        ATP Tour<br \/>\n    Wild card Wawrinka rallies into Australian Open R2<\/p>\n<p>Swiss veteran claims first win at majors since Wimbledon 2024<\/p>\n<p>January 19, 2026<\/p>\n<p>            <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/wawrinka-australian-open-2026-monday.jpg\" alt=\"Stan Wawrinka claims his first Australian Open win since 2021.\"\/><\/p>\n<p>AFP\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>        Stan Wawrinka claims his first Australian Open win since 2021.<br \/>\n        By ATP Staff<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atptour.com\/en\/players\/stan-wawrinka\/w367\/overview\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Stan Wawrinka<\/a> rode a wave fan support to notch his first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atptour.com\/en\/tournaments\/australian-open\/580\/overview\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Australian Open<\/a> win in five years Monday.<\/p>\n<p>The 40-year-old Swiss, who is playing his final year on Tour, rallied from a set down to defeat Serbian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atptour.com\/en\/players\/laslo-djere\/db63\/overview\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Laslo Djere<\/a> 5-7, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6(4) to charge into the second round.<\/p>\n<p>Despite only a light smattering of Swiss flags and red shirts in the crowd on a packed Kia Arena, the 2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atptour.com\/en\/tournaments\/australian-open\/580\/overview\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Australian Open<\/a> champion received overwhelming support as he snapped a four-match losing streak at the majors to take his first Grand Slam match win since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atptour.com\/en\/tournaments\/wimbledon\/540\/overview\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Wimbledon<\/a> 2024.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has been a long journey. It has been amazing, so many memories here, it has been incredible. The only reason I come back is because of the love you give me, it was amazing today,\u201d Wawrinka said in his on-court interview. \u201cIt is my last year. The passion is still intact. I am not young anymore, so I have to be careful.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday was amazing, so special to be on court and at a Grand Slam. It is the reason I train hard every day with my team, to be here competing with the best players in the world. I am so happy I won and have a chance to play one more match here. I am trying to enjoy but I am also a competitor, so I am always going to fight and hopefully I will play another good match.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.atptour.com\/en\/apps?utm_source=atp&amp;utm_medium=article&amp;utm_campaign=app_banner\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.atptour.com\/en\/news\/-\/media\/&#10;9333ed00493246e6a2ad692fa18710b7.ashx\" alt=\"The Official App Of Tennis | Download ATP WTA Live App\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Resorting to many defensive slices when his 40-year-old legs were stretched into the corners, Wawrinka hung with Djere in longer rallies, winning 58 per cent of points of nine or more shots according to Infosys Match Stats<\/p>\n<p>The Swiss was also dominant on serve, winning 86 per cent of first serves and 64 per cent of second serves. He earned 18 break points in the match, converting three, including a boomerang break in the fourth set after he fell behind 2-4.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;ve been working again more on my serve, especially to get more free points, to serve better.
