An Aussie woman has shared her confusion after she failed to receive an annual $30,000 cheque from her \u201crich\u201d grandma. The inheritance confession<\/a> has sparked debate about whether you are actually owed money<\/a> from your well-off relatives.<\/p>\n The woman wrote into the popular Everybody Has a Secret podcast for advice. While she comes from a \u201cmiddle-class family\u201d, she shared that her grandparents were \u201cvery rich\u201d and had worked hard to become the multi-millionaires<\/a> they are today.<\/p>\n \u201cThe money never trickled down to their children and no one really thought twice about it. It\u2019s their money, not ours, and we\u2019re all doing well for ourselves,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n RELATED<\/p>\n That all changed when the woman\u2019s grandfather died<\/a> and a little after his funeral, the woman\u2019s parents told her to visit her grandma more regularly. When she did go visit, she was met with a huge surprise.<\/p>\n \u201cShe presented me with a cheque of $30,000. I went into complete shock. I cried and thanked her for how this had changed my entire year,\u201d she shared.<\/p>\n \u201cA year later, the same thing happened. She shared her grandma\u2019s health had been declining and she didn’t seem like her regular self.<\/p>\n When the woman asked her mum about it, she revealed she wouldn\u2019t be receiving a $30,000 cheque again this year because the grandma thinks she \u201cdidn\u2019t act to suit her this year\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cWe all know she\u2019s on her way out with millions sitting in the bank so none of it really makes sense,\u201d the listener said.<\/p>\n \u201cThe idea that we haven’t behaved correctly is a bit confusing. My parents visit her frequently. All of us grandkids are married with great-grandkids. We\u2019ve all worked hard and become successful in our own right.\u201d<\/p>\n The woman said she knew the dilemma sounded \u201ca bit pathetic\u201d, but hoped to get advice on the “bizarre” situation and how she should move forward with her grandma.<\/p>\n Hosts of the Shameless podcast Ruby Hall, Charlotte White, and guest host Miranda Davidson, agreed the woman wasn\u2019t automatically owed<\/a> the yearly cheques just because she had received them previously.<\/p>\n Story Continues <\/p>\n \u201cNo, you\u2019re not owed anything. However, the pattern recognition that would happen, it\u2019s like, I\u2019m going to see Granny again,\u201d White said.<\/p>\n Davidson agreed the situation was a bit \u201cbizarre\u201d, but ultimately she wasn\u2019t entitled to receive the cash each year.<\/p>\n \u201cYou never had this money to begin with, so it\u2019s been a nice bonus. So you\u2019re not losing what you didn\u2019t know you already have,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n Davidson recommended the woman not raise the issue with her grandma, but instead up her visits and try to actually foster a relationship with her grandma.<\/p>\n A video of the dilemma was shared on social media, with most people agreeing the woman wasn\u2019t entitled to the cash.<\/p>\n \u201cThat\u2019s your grandparent \u2014 you should be visiting her because she\u2019s family. Not because you are expecting money,\u201d one said.<\/p>\n \u201cYou shouldn\u2019t expect ANYTHING,\u201d another said.<\/p>\n \u201cShe’s not punishing you, she’s just not giving you the 30k you’re expecting,\u201d a third added.<\/p>\n Others shared they hadn\u2019t received any inheritance from their grandparents, so the woman was \u201clucky\u201d to get anything and to have time with her grandma.<\/p>\n It comes ahead of a major inheritance transfer<\/a> coming for younger generations.<\/p>\n The Productivity Commission estimated that $3.5 trillion would be passed on from Aussies aged 60 and over by 2050, while more recent JBWere figures have put that figure at a staggering $5.4 trillion over the next 20 years.<\/p>\n A Finder survey of 1,017 people last year revealed 41 per cent of people were anticipating receiving an inheritance<\/a>.<\/p>\n One in 10 said they were depending on an inheritance to achieve major financial goals like buying a house or retiring<\/a>, while nearly one in five anticipated it would significantly improve their financial situation but they weren\u2019t depending on it.<\/p>\n Finder personal finance expert Sarah Megginson warned Aussies not to put all their eggs in the inheritance basket.<\/p>\n \u201cMany people are surprised after a loved one passes away to discover their financial situation is not what they expected, or that assets have been left to other people,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n Get the latest Yahoo Finance news – follow us on Facebook<\/a>, LinkedIn<\/a> and Instagram<\/a>.<\/p>\n
