(EYT) – With more than 23 years of experience in dental hygiene, Emily Shumaker, RDH, brings a rare blend of technical skill, empathy, and genuine connection to her role at Rooted Dental.

She joined the practice when it opened in July 2025, immediately becoming an essential part of the patient‑centered, family‑focused environment that defines the office.

Her Role at Rooted Dental

Emily’s day revolves around comprehensive patient care—reviewing medical histories, performing cleanings, taking x‑rays, and educating patients about their oral health. She believes that success in dental hygiene requires far more than clinical expertise. Communication, critical thinking, problem‑solving, and empathy are just as important in helping patients feel comfortable and informed.

One of the most meaningful aspects of her work is her role as a first‑line healthcare provider. Dental hygienists are often the first to detect signs of systemic disease or oral cancer, and Emily takes that responsibility seriously. Beyond cleaning teeth, she serves as an early warning system for her patients’ overall health.

A Lifelong Connection to Dentistry

Emily’s journey into dentistry began long before her career officially started. Growing up in her father’s practice—Dr. Myers‑Knox—she spent her childhood surrounded by the rhythms of dental care. She worked in his office during high school and often traveled with her family when he attended continuing education courses.

After earning her bachelor’s degree in biology from Grove City College in 2000, Emily explored how to use her science background in healthcare. A conversation with one of her father’s hygienists opened her eyes to the profession’s flexibility, family‑friendly schedule, and the deep relationships it fosters. She applied to the University of Pittsburgh’s Dental Hygiene Program, was accepted, and graduated in 2002.

For more than two decades, Emily worked alongside her father until his passing in July 2024. The stories patients shared afterward—of emergencies he handled and kindness he showed—reinforced her belief that dentistry is more than a job. It’s a calling rooted in service, compassion, and community.

What She Loves Most About Her Work

For Emily, the heart of dental hygiene lies in the relationships she builds. She values the trust patients place in her, the opportunity to improve their oral and overall health, and the privilege of caring for multiple generations of families. She understands that many people feel anxious about dental visits, so she works to create a calm, supportive environment where patients feel heard, respected, and cared for.

Joining Rooted Dental felt like a natural continuation of the environment she cherished in her father’s practice. The emphasis on patient care, teamwork, and a Christian, family‑centered approach mirrors the values she grew up with. Seeing Dr. Mealy’s daughters running around the office brings back memories of her own childhood, and she often reflects on how much her dad and Dr. Mealy would have had in common.

Life Beyond the Office

Outside of work, Emily enjoys spending time with her family and supporting her teenage daughters in their activities. While she can’t imagine a career outside of dentistry, she knows she would have found her way into healthcare in some form—helping people has always been at the core of who she is.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Dentistry

Emily sees an exciting future for the profession. Dentistry is becoming more personalized, more holistic, and increasingly shaped by new technologies—including the emerging role of artificial intelligence. She believes the next generation of hygienists will need strong technical skills, but also the ability to connect with patients on a human level.

Her advice for those entering the field is simple:

Your ability to connect with people is just as important as your clinical skills. Be empathetic, listen well, and educate patients in ways they can understand. You don’t just treat teeth—you treat people.

After more than two decades in private practice, Emily remains confident that the greatest reward of being a dental hygienist is the relationships built along the way.

For more information or to schedule an appointment, visit rooteddentalpc.com or call (814) 797-2254.

KNOX, Pa.
