An extraordinary text message exchange between Donald Trump<\/a> and Norway\u2019s prime minister has revealed the US president no longer felt \u201can obligation to think purely of peace\u201d because he didn\u2019t get the Nobel peace prize, as he again declined to rule out seizing Greenland by force.<\/p>\n

The disclosure of the exchange with prime minister Jonas Gahr St\u00f8re<\/a> comes amid a concerted push by Trump to grab the territory, a largely self-governing part of Denmark. In recent weeks, he has said the US would take control of the Arctic island \u201cone way or the other\u201d<\/a> and, over the weekend: \u201cNow it is time, and it will be done!!!\u201d<\/p>\n

On Monday, he told NBC news he would \u201c100%\u201d push ahead with his plan to impose tariffs on the country\u2019s allies, and blamed Norway<\/a> for denying him the Nobel prize. \u201cNorway totally controls it despite what they say. They like to say they have nothing to do with it, but they have everything to do with it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The Nobel peace prize is awarded by the Norwegian Nobel committee, a five-member private body whose members \u2013 mostly retired politicians \u2013 are appointed by Norway\u2019s parliament but whose decisions are independent of the government.<\/p>\n

US needs \u2018complete and total control\u2019 of Greenland, says Trump<\/p>\n

In his text message to St\u00f8re, Trump said Denmark \u201ccannot protect\u201d Greenland from Russia or China, adding: \u201cWhy do they have a \u2018right of ownership\u2019 anyway? There are no written documents, it\u2019s only that a boat landed there hundreds of years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n

The US president said he had \u201cdone more for Nato than anyone else since its founding, and now Nato should do something for the United States\u201d. The world was \u201cnot secure unless we have complete and total control of Greenland\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n

A second man being held at a US immigration detention facility in Texas has died in two weeks, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said on Monday.<\/p>\n
