Police were searching an area<\/a> near Lloyd Center in Northeast Portland late Monday for a person who shot and injured two police officers.<\/p>\n

The officers were taken by ambulance to a hospital, the Portland Police Bureau said, where they were in stable condition and recovering Monday night. <\/p>\n

Just after 8 p.m. Monday, officers responded to a report of a person making threats with a knife near the Lloyd Center, Portland police said at an evening news conference. Officers made contact with a suspect and were fired upon moments later, Portland Police Chief Bob Day told reporters. Day would not say whether the officers fired their weapons. <\/p>\n

The bureau released an image they said showed the person who fired the shots, describing him as a white male in his mid-30s with facial hair and wearing a black baseball cap, black jacket over a gray hooded sweatshirt, black pants and black shoes. He was seen with a black backpack and a green shopping bag.<\/p>\n

The man is still believed to be armed, police said, and should not be approached.<\/p>\n

Police officials said earlier that the gunfire broke out near Northeast 17th Avenue and Clackamas Street. <\/p>\n

About 90 police units had responded to the area to mount an intensive search, blocking off a swath of Northeast Portland between Broadway and Multnomah Street and 15th and 21st avenues.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have literally marshaled, in the early hours of this, every available resource that we had to the area,\u201d Day said. \u201cOur (Special Emergency Reaction Team) is doing a very methodical search for the suspect, so this is very much ongoing in real time.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

People who live within the police perimeter had been told to stay inside with doors and windows closed and locked. Officers could be seen searching the area with vehicle spotlights, and the bureau\u2019s airplane was circling the area.<\/p>\n

Police stationed near the edge of the search area wore helmets in addition to standard ballistic vests.<\/p>\n

Day declined to identify the injured officers.<\/p>\n

Portland Mayor Keith Wilson, who visited the search area and was briefed by investigators, wished the officers who were shot \u201ca speedy recovery.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re grateful for all the officers of the Portland police department,\u201d Wilson told reporters. \u201cThis is a stark reminder of the dangers of the job.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wilson and Day said they had visited the injured officers at nearby Legacy Emanuel Medical Center before coming to the search scene.<\/p>\n

Investigators asked that anyone with information or video of the incident contact police. <\/p>\n
