WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) – North Star Health Alliance began laying off 120 people at hospitals in Carthage and Ogdensburg on Monday.<\/p>\n
The health care group lost state funding in December and has been unable to secure it again.<\/p>\n
So, what\u2019s next for those displaced workers?<\/p>\n
Searching for a new job<\/p>\n
In Jefferson County, Cheryl Mayforth with The WorkPlace said those looking for new jobs can start their search at her center as soon as Wednesday.<\/p>\n
\u201cJanuary 21, here at The Workplace, Samaritan Health will be here recruiting for various positions. Thursday, that\u2019s January 22, from 10 until 2, a company called Caregivers will be here at The WorkPlace and they\u2019re looking for certified personal care aides, home health aides and nursing assistants,\u201d Mayforth said.<\/p>\n
The WorkPlace encourages anyone who is out of work to apply for unemployment while searching for a new job.<\/p>\n
Healthcare jobs in demand<\/p>\n
With other hospitals and health care providers looking for staff, Ogdensburg Mayor Mike Tooley said he would not be surprised if people relocated from the Ogdensburg area.<\/p>\n
\u201cAt the end of the day, people have to fend for themselves and their families, so there\u2019s a chance that people may have to consider a move,\u201d Tooley said.<\/p>\n
Union officials disappointed<\/p>\n
Union officials representing some of the workers said they wish they had known about the situation between North Star and the state sooner.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m a little disappointed that the employer waited so long to reach out to us and by us I mean 1199 because, you know, we do have people that are working with the state to try and help us with this and we were only made aware of it when it was first published, I guess back in December,\u201d said Mary Wilsie, North Country Area Director for 1199SEIU.<\/p>\n
Impact on community services<\/p>\n
Tooley said the layoffs are not only a hit to the economy, but could make for longer commutes to get care.<\/p>\n
\u201cPeople in need might have to travel out of town now. I know in their statement yesterday…the hospital administration talked about some of the services going to be provided by Carthage, but that\u2019s a pretty long haul,\u201d Tooley said.<\/p>\n
