That number is consistent with past years, according to the memorandum. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, the federal agency in charge of the country\u2019s naturalization process, informed the city that it had paused the scheduled ceremonies because it has processed \u201csignificantly less\u201d naturalization applications and because its vetting process has increased, slowing the rate at which applicants become eligible for citizenship.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Naturalization ceremonies occur at the end of the citizenship process and involve candidates reciting an oath of allegiance to the United States. The ceremonies are <a href=\"https:\/\/my.uscis.gov\/citizenship\/what_to_expect\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">required<\/a> to complete that process.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The pause comes as the Trump administration has moved to tighten immigration and naturalization policies nationwide, including issuing a broader\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uscis.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/document\/policy-alerts\/PM-602-0194-PendingApplicationsAdditionalHighRiskCountries-20260101.pdf?utm\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">halt on naturalization<\/a> for individuals from countries subject to a federal travel ban. That shift has <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/administration\/5693224-migrants-stuck-in-limbo\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">led to<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/citizenship-naturalization-ceremonies-canceled-finish-line-lawyer\/story?id=128630195\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reports<\/a> of citizenship candidates being removed from scheduled ceremonies.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanimmigrationcouncil.org\/blog\/president-trump-expands-his-travel-ban-what-you-need-to-know\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">At least 39 countries<\/a> are currently on the travel ban list, including Afghanistan, Somalia, Sudan and Syria.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It is unclear whether USCIS will resume the naturalization ceremonies scheduled for City Hall, though the agency reviews its need for ceremonies every two months, according to the city\u2019s memorandum. The agency plans to hold a ceremony in San Antonio this month that is open to individuals from the region, including Austin.
