A Customs and Border Protection officer was injured Wednesday morning during a targeted operation in south Los Angeles.<\/p>\n
The incident unfolded near the unincorporated neighborhood of Willowbrook and the city of Compton as immigration enforcement officers attempted to arrest William Eduardo Moran Carballo, whom the Department of Homeland Security described as “a violent criminal” from El Salvador.<\/p>\n
Shortly after 7 a.m., Carballo attempted to flee from immigration officers and \u201cweaponized his vehicle and rammed law enforcement,\u201d DHS said. A federal agent fired shots at Carballo, who was not injured.<\/p>\n
A CBP officer involved in the operation was injured during the incident. The extent and nature of the injuries were not immediately clear.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis situation is evolving, and more information is forthcoming,\u201d the agency said in a statement.<\/p>\n
Carballo was involved in human smuggling and has two prior arrests for “inflicting corporal injury on a spouse or cohabitant,” according to DHS.<\/p>\n
An immigration judge issued a final removal order in 2019, according to the statement. <\/p>\n
Los Angeles County Sheriff ‘s deputies responded to the scene around 7:25 a.m., the department said in a statement. <\/p>\n
A damaged BMW sedan appeared to have crashed into a curb and a deployed airbag could be seen on the driver\u2019s side.<\/p>\n
