Josh Stein has declared a \u2018State of Emergency\u2019 ahead of the winter storm expected to hit the state over the weekend. On Thursday, Stein and officials from the North Carolina Department of Public Safety, the North Carolina Department of Transportation, North Carolina Emergency Management, the State Highway Patrol, and the North Carolina National Guard will hold a media briefing with updates on storm preparations. The briefing is scheduled for 11:15 a.m. at the State Emergency Operations Center in Raleigh, and WXII will stream it live.”A winter storm is approaching, and now is the time to prepare,” said Governor Stein. “Please get ready. Get everything you need in advance of the storm and have a plan in case your power goes out. I encourage all North Carolinians to stay home and off the roads this weekend unless absolutely necessary so first responders can do their jobs safely and effectively.”NCDOT crews have been pre-treating roads, bridges, and overpasses with brine, restocking salt supplies, and ensuring equipment is ready.Roadway conditions could deteriorate Saturday and may remain hazardous for several days after the storm due to freezing temperatures. The executive order waives certain transportation regulations for vehicles supporting emergency response efforts statewide, helping agencies coordinate response efforts. To stay prepared for winter weather, North Carolina Emergency Management officials recommend these tips:Always keep at least a three-day supply of nonperishable food and a supply of medication in your home.Keep cellphones and mobile devices charged in case of power outages.Keep fresh batteries on hand for weather radios and flashlights.Dress warmly. Wear multiple layers of thin clothing instead of a single layer of thick clothing.Do not leave pets outside for long periods of time during freezing weather.Look out for your friends, neighbors, and the elderly during winter weather.
