The 62-year-old Fijian exercised his career money exemption, making the 34-time PGA Tour winner eligible for full-field events this year. He then entered the season-opening Sony Open in Hawaii, impressively finishing T40 after making his first cut<\/a> since the 2020 Memorial in his first Tour-sanctioned start since the 2024 Masters. <\/p>\n But the three-time major winner\u2019s decision raised a question: How much will he tee it up on Tour this year?\u00a0<\/p>\n He confirmed to Sports Illustrated on Tuesday from the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hual\u0101lai, the season opener for the PGA Tour Champions, that he\u2019s not planning to play against the game\u2019s top players regularly, and will stick to competing full-time on the 50-and-over tour.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cIf I wanted to, I can play one or two other [PGA Tour] events if possible,\u201d Singh said. \u201cMaybe if I\u2019m fit enough to walk the Masters because that\u2019s a hilly golf course, I may play San Antonio [the Valero Texas Open] a week before that and Phoenix is a pretty flat golf course, so I could play that.<\/p>\n \u201cSo besides that, I mean, I\u2019m happy to be on the Champions tour.\u201d<\/p>\n Why did he decide to tee it up at the Sony Open?<\/p>\n \u201cI wanted to play Sony,\u201d said Singh, who won the event in 2005, \u201cso instead of asking for a sponsor\u2019s invite, I just said, \u2018s—, I\u2019m 62, I don\u2019t know how many more years I\u2019m gonna get a chance,\u2019 it\u2019s the last time to play Sony because it seems like they\u2019re not going back there<\/a>, so I said, \u2018I love the golf course, I love Hawaii, so I might as well just do that.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n A round of applause for the veteran \ud83d\udc4f<\/p>\n 62-year-old @VijaySinghGolf<\/a> was the oldest player in the field @SonyOpenHawaii<\/a>, made the cut and finished T38 with the young guns on the @PGATOUR<\/a>. pic.twitter.com\/RmMXteTJaR<\/a><\/p>\n
