{"id":421912,"date":"2026-01-22T01:31:16","date_gmt":"2026-01-22T01:31:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/421912\/"},"modified":"2026-01-22T01:31:16","modified_gmt":"2026-01-22T01:31:16","slug":"poor-insurance-reimbursements-place-pa-hospitals-at-risk-of-closure-report-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/421912\/","title":{"rendered":"Poor insurance reimbursements place Pa. hospitals at risk of closure, report says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Insufficient insurance reimbursements could drive more than a dozen Pennsylvania hospitals to close within five years, according to a<a href=\"https:\/\/haponlinecontent.azureedge.net\/resourcelibrary\/time-to-act.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"> report released <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/haponlinecontent.azureedge.net\/resourcelibrary\/time-to-act.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Wednesda<\/a>y by the Hospital and Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n<p>The industry group hired consultancy Oliver Wyman to create the report.<\/p>\n<p>In its analysis, the New York City-based firm focused on Pennsylvania\u2019s Medicaid payouts, which amounted to 87 cents on the dollar in 2022, compared to $1.26 nationally.<\/p>\n<p>Commercial insurers worsen the situation by reimbursing Pennsylvania health care providers less than those in most other states, the report said.<\/p>\n<p>A \u201chighly unfavorable medical liability litigation environment\u201d is also cited as a factor harming the state\u2019s hospitals along with a burdensome regulatory regime.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithout timely, targeted state support, many Pennsylvania hospitals will struggle to maintain existing services or make the necessary investments in workforce, technology and infrastructure that Pennsylvania needs,\u201d the report said.<\/p>\n<p>Oliver Wyman claims 12 to 14 hospitals could close through 2030, adding to the 25 that have shuttered since 2016. Many more may cut services in a bid to stay afloat.<\/p>\n<p>As things stand, 37% of the state\u2019s hospitals have a negative operating margin, and another 14% are just barely scraping by, according to the report.<\/p>\n<p>Rural hospital are especially at risk, since they depend disproportionately on Medicaid patients.
