{"id":423221,"date":"2026-01-22T16:31:10","date_gmt":"2026-01-22T16:31:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/423221\/"},"modified":"2026-01-22T16:31:10","modified_gmt":"2026-01-22T16:31:10","slug":"health-insurance-ceos-to-appear-before-house-committees-as-premiums-soar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/423221\/","title":{"rendered":"Health insurance CEOs to appear before House committees as premiums soar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"anchor-99b985\" class=\"body-graf\">The CEOs of five major health insurers are set to face a grilling from members of Congress on Thursday as House Republicans seek to place blame for rising health care costs. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-a2e93b\" class=\"body-graf\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/waysandmeans.house.gov\/2026\/01\/08\/ways-and-means-energy-and-commerce-committee-leaders-release-details-for-health-insurance-company-hearings-on-affordability\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">back-to-back hearings<\/a> before the Energy and Commerce and the Ways and Means committees come after Republicans allowed enhanced Affordable Care Act subsidies to expire at the end of last year, a move that led to sharp premium increases for millions of Americans.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-88c166\" class=\"body-graf\">Congress has few immediate plans to address the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/obamacare-sign-ups-down-monthly-premiums-rise-rcna253204\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lapse in the tax credits<\/a>. The House and the Senate have yet to reach a deal to lower skyrocketing health insurance premiums. And with the Senate out this week and the House set to go into recess next week, the odds of passing a bill anytime soon are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/congress\/senate-aca-funding-talks-fizzle-higher-premiums-take-effect-millions-rcna254227\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">very slim<\/a>, experts say. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-4617fe\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cInsurance companies are an easy target because they make people miserable through prior authorization review and in many other ways,\u201d said Drew Altman, president and CEO of KFF, a nonpartisan health policy research group. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-233656\" class=\"body-graf\">The CEOs of UnitedHealth Group, CVS Health Group, Cigna Health Group, Elevance Health and Ascendiun are set to testify. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-531f4f\" class=\"body-graf\">President Donald Trump and Republicans are facing criticism <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/donald-trump\/trump-progressives-affordability-rcna253633\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">from voters about the cost of living<\/a>, including health care.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-c457c4\" class=\"body-graf\">Last week, Trump rolled out his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/trump-health-care-plan-direct-payments-obamacare-congress-rcna254232\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">long-awaited health care plan<\/a>, which included a proposal to redirect funding used for ACA subsidies into health savings accounts. The plan offered few details and drew criticism for largely restating ideas Trump has previously floated. Many of the proposals need congressional approval, raising questions about how quickly \u2014 or whether \u2014 they can be implemented.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-6467d1\" class=\"body-graf\">Trump\u2019s plan is not expected to be the focus of Thursday\u2019s hearings.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-f1b4c8\" class=\"body-graf\">Instead, they are expected to be the first in a series to examine the \u201croot causes\u201d driving higher health care prices, committee Chairs Brett Guthrie, R-Ky., and Jason Smith, R-Mo., said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-d8672f\" class=\"body-graf\">Thursday\u2019s hearings will also take aim at the ACA, which Republicans say is a major driver of higher health care costs.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-b82e25\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cThe ACA mandated coverage for individuals regardless of underlying health conditions and largely prohibited plans from underwriting plans at the individual level,\u201d a <a href=\"https:\/\/d1dth6e84htgma.cloudfront.net\/01_22_2026_HE_Hearing_Memorandum_7367740d5d.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hearing document <\/a>says, \u201ceffectively increasing health care access and affordability for the unhealthiest Americans but also driving up health care costs for healthier Americans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-bce040\" class=\"body-graf\">Gideon Lukens, a senior fellow and director of research and data analysis on the health policy team at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, a nonpartisan research group, said the ACA fixed the issues around coverage for people with pre-existing conditions and made the overall insurance market \u201cfunctional and stable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-a9a8c4\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cBefore the ACA, insurers on the individual and small-group markets could deny coverage to people with pre-existing conditions like cancer or diabetes, or could charge them much more,\u201d he said. \u201cInsurance premiums in these markets often fluctuated widely year to year, and options were limited.\u201d <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-0b95ef\" class=\"body-graf\">The \u201celephant in the room,\u201d he added, is the expired enhanced ACA tax credit.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-d6d94a\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cA hearing on health care affordability should focus on the affordability crisis that\u2019s unfolding right now because of the choice to allow the enhancements to expire,\u201d Lukens said. \u201cA lot of harm can still be prevented, but an extension is needed as soon as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-15cb5d\" class=\"body-graf\">Insurers have long argued that premium hikes largely reflect rising costs elsewhere in the health care system, particularly rising hospital and prescription drug costs. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-5ecdb2\" class=\"body-graf\">Premiums rose this year not only for ACA plans, but also for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-care\/higher-health-insurance-premiums-affordable-care-act-employer-rcna235925\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">job-based insurance<\/a> and Medicare. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-4396db\" class=\"body-graf\">According to written testimony, Stephen Hemsley, the CEO of UnitedHealth Group, the nation\u2019s largest health insurer, plans to tell lawmakers that insurers \u201ccompete aggressively\u201d to keep premiums at prices people can afford, but the cost is largely determined by the broader health care system.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-422883\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cIt is a symptom, not a cause,\u201d Hemsley\u2019s testimony reads. \u201cPremium rates are based on two key factors: how much care is used and how much is charged for that care.
