Earlier this week, a member of the sports media at the Australian Open asked Coco Gauff about President Donald Trump and the state of her home country during a post-match press conference. Gauff expressed fatigue with the issue before answering the question honestly and diplomatically<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Now, the same reporter is posing similar versions of the same question to more American tennis players, and the responses have varied. Ben Shelton, Frances Tiafoe, and Tommy Paul have not been asked yet. <\/p>\n

However, Amanda Anisimova and Taylor Fritz balked at the question. Meanwhile, Madison Keys and Jessica Pegula took a more bipartisan approach. But below is a breakdown of what all four players said in their post-match press conferences.<\/p>\n

Amanda Anisimova<\/p>\n

At the 2:00 mark of her press conference, the reporter said, “Congratulations on the\u00a0win. I’ve been asking a lot of the\u00a0American players just how it feels to\u00a0play under the American flag right now. And I’m curious how you feel?”<\/p>\n

Anisiomova replied, “Yeah, I mean, I was born in America,\u00a0so I’m always proud to represent my\u00a0country. And yeah, a lot of us are doing\u00a0really well, and it’s great to see a lot\u00a0of, you know, great athletes on the\u00a0women’s side, on the men’s side. So,\u00a0yeah, I feel like we’re all um doing a\u00a0great job representing ourselves.”<\/p>\n

The reporter followed up, “Sorry. Just to clarify a little, I\u00a0mean, sort of in the context of the last\u00a0year of everything that’s been happening\u00a0in the U.S., does that complicate\u00a0that feeling at all?” Anisimova said with a smile, “I don’t think that’s relevant.”<\/p>\n

Taylor Fritz<\/p>\n

At the 8:00 mark of his press conference, the reporter asked Fritz, “Hi, Taylor. Congrats on the win. You know, I’m asking all the American players this – there’s a lot happening back home in the U.S. and kind of has been for a lot of the last year, and I’m just kind of wondering how you’re feeling about all of it?”<\/p>\n

Fritz buried his head in his hands before explaining, “I mean, not sure what we’re like specifically talking about, but there is a lot going on in the U.S., and I don’t know. I feel like whatever I say here is going to get put in a headline, and it’s going to get taken out of context. So, I’d really rather not do something that’s going to cause a big distraction for me in the middle of the tournament.”<\/p>\n

Madison Keys<\/p>\n

At the 4:35 mark, the reporter said, “Congratulations\u00a0on the win. This is a pretty\u00a0sensitive subject, but, you know, a\u00a0year into the second Trump\u00a0administration, tensions in the U.S. are\u00a0pretty ridiculously high. And I’m just\u00a0wondering how do you feel personally\u00a0about what the Trump administration has\u00a0been doing? And how has it felt to you\u00a0when you’ve spent time in the U.S.?”<\/p>\n

Keys answered, “I think my stance has been pretty\u00a0obvious. I think it’s pretty obvious\u00a0where I stand, and I am hopeful that we\u00a0as a country can\u00a0come together and\u00a0get back to the values that I think make\u00a0our country great. I\u00a0am not a fan of divisiveness, and I think\u00a0the beauty of\u00a0the U.S. is we are a mixing pot. We are\u00a0very diverse. We are\u00a0a home of immigrants. and I hope that we\u00a0can get back to those values.”<\/p>\n

Jessica Pegula<\/p>\n

At the 6:30 mark, the reporter said,\u00a0“Congrats on the win. This is a\u00a0pretty sensitive subject, but you know,\u00a0the U.S. is a year into the second Trump\u00a0administration now, and a lot of people\u00a0are suffering, and I’m wondering how\u00a0you’re feeling about things back home\u00a0personally and specifically what the\u00a0mood is like in Florida?”<\/p>\n

Pegula answered, “Yeah, that’s a tough question. I\u00a0feel, you know, I don’t know. I don’t\u00a0like to kind of dabble too much into\u00a0politics, just because it’s just not the\u00a0space that I really want to say that\u00a0much on. But yeah, I just hope that\u00a0everybody can kind of, at some point, come\u00a0together and work together as far as\u00a0situations or whether it’s political or\u00a0not political in our country. <\/p>\n

I feel\u00a0like, you know, we have a big country\u00a0where there’s a lot of media attention\u00a0on us too, and that’s tough because\u00a0things definitely make their way around\u00a0the world, and even me being in\u00a0Australia, you hear about all these\u00a0things going on back home. But I just\u00a0hope you know that we can come together\u00a0at some point with like a\u00a0good dialogue where things can actually\u00a0get accomplished and things that we want\u00a0to see accomplished, and it not be so\u00a0divisive, I guess.”<\/p>\n

When asked specifically about the mood in Florida, Pegula replied, “Personally, Florida’s been, I think, okay. I think Florida\u00a0there’s a big melting pot of different\u00a0people from all over, in Florida. So, I\u00a0feel like, especially me being in South\u00a0Florida near Miami, I mean, there’s\u00a0people of all over the country that come\u00a0to move to Florida, and there’s a lot of\u00a0international people that are there. <\/p>\n

So,\u00a0I don’t know if that’s maybe why you\u00a0kind of get a lot of different cultural\u00a0differences in a good way,\u00a0honestly. So, Florida to me, at least\u00a0where I live, has been fine.”<\/p>\n
