Liverpool will have to pay Tottenham<\/a> a British record transfer fee if they want to sign Micky van de Ven.<\/p>\n

That is according to GIVEMESPORT<\/a>‘s senior football correspondent Ben Jacobs, who discussed the rumours of the Dutchman’s potential exit from N17.<\/p>\n

Van de Ven signed for Spurs<\/a> in a \u00a343million deal in 2023 and has quickly established himself as not only first choice in the Tottenham side but as one of the best defenders in the Premier League.<\/p>\n

And that has led to speculation around his future at Spurs<\/a>, particularly given the poor performances on the pitch in the top flight, not just this season under Thomas Frank, but last season under Ange Postecoglou too.<\/p>\n

Spurs Need An Overhaul On And Off The Pitch<\/p>\n

Tottenham<\/a> finished fifth in the Premier League in van de Ven’s first season at the club, but followed that up with a 17th-placed finish last year and are on course to finish in the bottom half of the table again.<\/p>\n

Spurs<\/a> did win the Europa League under Postecoglou and have qualified for the knockout stages of this year’s UEFA Champions League, but van de Ven will need to see improvements, not just on the pitch, but behind the scenes to think about committing his future to the club further.<\/p>\n

The 24-year-old signed a five-year contract when he arrived at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with his deal due to expire in the summer of 2027.<\/p>\n

Liverpool Linked With Van De Ven Transfer<\/p>\n

Liverpool are known admirers of the Dutchman and will be looking for a new partner for Virgil van Dijk if Ibrahima Konate leaves this summer and for a long-term successor to van Dijk, who is ten years van de Ven’s senior at 34.<\/p>\n

There have been rumours of interest from the Reds in signing van de Ven during the January transfer window, with talk of a \u00a378million bid<\/a>, but Jacobs ruled out any such move this month, deeming van de Ven’s future was “one to watch” in the summer, and revealed it would take significantly more than \u00a387million to prise him away from Spurs.<\/p>\n

Speaking on GMS’ Market Madness podcast<\/a>, Jacobs said: “The player is on record as basically saying his whole family are Liverpool fans.<\/p>\n

“I’m told at this stage that Tottenham Hotspur value Micky van de Ven as not just a record defender sale but as a British transfer record fee, even though this summer he’ll only have two years left on his current deal.<\/p>\n

“Nothing is going to happen now Micky van de Ven will wait, see where Tottenham are at in the summer and understand what kind of interest he has. Of course Tottenham want to try and get him to sign a contract extension<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Van de Ven One To Watch In The Summer<\/p>\n

“Liverpool will have several targets and I’m not aware that they’ve reached out to van de Ven, but he’s still waiting to understand if Liverpool or another club are going to come in for him. PSG have appreciated MVDV for quite some time.<\/p>\n

“With van de Ven this is more a summer saga than now, despite a lot of media reports, because Liverpool are going to be quite cautious and if Tottenham’s valuation remains a British transfer record type number that will ward off the market.<\/p>\n

“Micky van de Ven’s future is one to watch for sure, but it’s all going to depend on where that Tottenham project is come summer before the player makes a determination as to whether he wants to extend or potentially start exploring options.”<\/p>\n

The British transfer record stands at \u00a3125million, with Liverpool actually having brokne it twice last summer, first to sign Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen and then to bring in Alexander Isak from Newcastle.<\/p>\n
