Greensboro, North Carolina, may struggle to climb above freezing again for an entire week after the storm.<\/p>\n<p>A protracted cold snap combined with extensive power outages will heighten the risk for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theweathernetwork.com\/en\/news\/weather\/severe\/five-awful-extreme-cold-effects-frozen-corneas-iceman-frostbite-hypothermia\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">cold-related injuries<\/a> among vulnerable people, as well as the risk for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theweathernetwork.com\/en\/news\/lifestyle\/health\/beware-of-carbon-monoxide-poisoning-after-a-heavy-snowfall\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">carbon monoxide poisoning<\/a> due to improper use of tools like grills and generators.<\/p>\n<p>Forecasters expect temperatures to remain well below seasonal across most of the eastern U.S. through the beginning of February.<\/p>\n<p>Southern U.S. isn\u2019t used to major winter storms<\/p>\n<p>Folks across the southern half of the United States are no strangers to winter weather, but the region isn\u2019t exactly equipped to deal with large helpings of snow and ice.<\/p>\n<p><img url=\"\/\/images.twnmm.com\/c55i45ef3o2a\/4gNWXtgCQVlKyIqLvXS8IF\/5bc5ebd020fbc66fe7919af226dd8ecb\/Why_Winter_Storms_Hit_Harder_In_The_U.S..png\" alt=\"Why Winter Storms Hit Harder In The U.S.\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"fill\" style=\"position:absolute;height:100%;width:100%;left:0;top:0;right:0;bottom:0;object-fit:contain;object-position:center center;color:transparent\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Why_Winter_Storms_Hit_Harder_In_The_U.S..png\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Snow plows and road treatment equipment grow scarce the farther south you travel, and vehicles aren&#8217;t equipped with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theweathernetwork.com\/en\/news\/lifestyle\/community\/winter-winter-tire-myths-what-you-need-to-know-for-safer-driving\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">winter tires<\/a>. Most drivers also don\u2019t have experience navigating icy or snowy roads.<\/p>\n<p>Another problem, particularly with this upcoming storm, is that ice pellet accumulations tend to freeze into a thick sheet of ice on roads, sidewalks, and parking lots. This slab of glacier-like ice is nearly impossible to remove once it freezes into place.
