was rescued by the Marine Mammal Care Center Los Angeles<\/a> from Ballona Creek on Jan. 15, making him the first patient of the year, the nonprofit said in a Facebook post.<\/p>\n\u201cConfetti tested positive for leptospirosis, a bacterial infection that affects the kidneys and can be fatal if not treated,\u201d the nonprofit said. \u201cHis blood work also showed concerning liver abnormalities.\u201d<\/p>\n
Veterinary staff started him on supportive medications and antibiotics, the nonprofit said, adding that staff also provided him with fluids to treat his dehydration.<\/p>\n
For the first few days after arriving at the hospital, the nonprofit said, \u201cConfetti was markedly lethargic.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cHe showed no interest in fish and rarely moved,\u201d according to the nonporift. <\/p>\n
His \u201cpoor condition and lack of improvement\u201d worried veterinary staff.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut finally, on day four in care, he started moving around and was more alert,\u201d the nonprofit said.<\/p>\n
Just three days later, \u201che successfully chased and ate live fish,\u201d the nonprofit said.<\/p>\n
And, by the next day, he was eating multiple times per day.<\/p>\n
\u201cIncidentally, skull X-rays taken during Confetti\u2019s initial exams showed that he has two bullets in his head, indicating that this was actually the second time he had narrowly escaped death,\u201d the non-profit said. \u201cSadly, it is not unusual to find sea lions that have been shot by humans, highlighting the prevalence of violence these animals face.\u201d<\/p>\n
The nonprofit said in many of these cases, the injured sea lions die; however, in some cases, they can survive.<\/p>\n
