{"id":425243,"date":"2026-01-23T15:41:10","date_gmt":"2026-01-23T15:41:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/425243\/"},"modified":"2026-01-23T15:41:10","modified_gmt":"2026-01-23T15:41:10","slug":"blood-sugar-spikes-linked-with-69-higher-risk-of-alzheimers-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/425243\/","title":{"rendered":"Blood Sugar Spikes Linked With 69% Higher Risk of Alzheimer&#8217;s : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>High blood sugar spikes after meals could be a contributing factor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/just-one-gene-may-be-responsible-for-over-90-of-alzheimers-cases\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">to Alzheimer&#8217;s risk<\/a>, according to a new study that gives us more insight into the relationship between  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/diabetes\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73018\" data-postid=\"189166\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">diabetes<\/a>, insulin resistance, and dementia.<\/p>\n<p>Previous studies <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1111\/jdi.12087\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">have found<\/a> that diabetes and dementia can be connected in some cases. But whether one is causing the other, and what biological mechanisms are involved, remain areas that scientists are still investigating.<\/p>\n<p>Here, researchers from the UK ran an analysis of a large genetic dataset covering 357,883 individuals, finding that people with a relatively higher level of blood sugar (glucose) in the two hours after eating were also 69 percent more likely to develop <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/alzheimer-s-disease\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alzheimer&#8217;s disease<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/garlic-could-be-a-secret-weapon-to-keep-down-your-glucose-and-cholesterol\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Garlic Could Be a Secret Weapon to Keep Down Your Glucose And Cholesterol<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This finding could help shape future prevention strategies, highlighting the importance of managing blood sugar not just overall, but specifically after meals,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/news.liverpool.ac.uk\/2026\/01\/14\/blood-sugar-spikes-linked-to-higher-risk-of-alzheimers-disease\/amp\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a> epidemiologist Andrew Mason, from the University of Liverpool.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers used a technique called <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mendelian_randomization\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mendelian Randomization<\/a> (MR) to analyze the data. Instead of actually taking measurements of post-meal blood sugar, they looked for people with genes known to be associated with sugar spikes after eating.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/AlzheimersGraph.jpg\" alt=\"Alzheimer's risk graph\" width=\"642\" height=\"265\" class=\"wp-image-189169 size-full\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The data showed a significantly increased risk of  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/go\/IaO\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73015\" data-postid=\"189166\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">Alzheimer&#8217;s<\/a> connected to 2-hour post-load glucose (2hPG). (Mason et al., Diabetes Obes. Metab., 2025)<\/p>\n<p>As this looks at the genetics that each person is born with, it takes out the influence of environmental factors and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/theres-one-critical-thing-you-can-do-to-cut-your-risk-of-dementia\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">other health conditions<\/a>, allowing cause-and-effect to be determined more confidently.<\/p>\n<p>While there was a strong connection between post-meal blood sugar spikes and Alzheimer&#8217;s, no link was found for standard glucose or insulin levels, or insulin resistance, for either Alzheimer&#8217;s or dementia overall.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, brain scans carried out on a subset of the participants showed no relationship between glucose or insulin traits and changes in brain or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/brains-memory-center-never-stops-making-neurons-study-confirms\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hippocampus size<\/a>, or more white matter damage \u2013 the implication being that something more subtle is happening to connect sugar spikes with Alzheimer&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Previous observational and MR studies <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.2337\/db21-0905\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">have suggested<\/a> that 2-hour post-load glucose is a glycaemic trait that strongly predicts poorer cardiovascular outcomes,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1111\/dom.70353\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">write<\/a> the researchers in their published paper.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our findings suggest that the genetic predisposition for this marker of postprandial glucose is also associated with an increased risk for Alzheimer&#8217;s disease.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s still not clear why a post-meal burst in sugar raises the risk of dementia, but we know that the brain <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.2337\/db20-0895\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">relies on glucose<\/a>, just like the rest of the body.
