A Southern California whale-watching group on Wednesday enjoyed a rare and spectacular encounter with perhaps 20 orcas that were hunting sea lions close to shore at one of the Channel Islands<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe witnessed these apex predators combing the shoreline for their favorite pinniped prey, and they easily connected,\u201d Pacific Offshore Expeditions stated via Instagram<\/a>.<\/p>\n

While it\u2019s rare to encounter transient orcas off Southern California, it\u2019s less so for Pacific Offshore Expeditions<\/a>, which offers all-day trips with orcas, or killer whales, specifically in mind.<\/p>\n

However, any sighting involving 20 orcas hunting together, and loudly vocalizing, is extraordinary.<\/p>\n

The accompanying video shows orcas in various behaviors, and features orca communications picked up via hydrophone.<\/p>\n

Marine Mammal enthusiasts can also view images of the orcas shared via Instagram<\/a> by Ryan Lawler, owner of Pacific Offshore Expeditions. (See post below.)<\/p>\n

Lawler\u2019s description: \u201cYesterday we had some action that I\u2019ve been hoping to witness for quite a while: Killer Whales patrolling beaches in the Channel Islands. And not just a few\u2026 but a pod of around 20, mostly featuring our most charismatic and frequently seen families.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was jaw dropping to see them in less than 20 feet of water, tracing the shorelines of coves and going between offshore rocks and the island. Eventually they found what they were looking for and quickly killed a pinniped amongst the rocks.\u201d<\/p>\n

Transient orcas prey on other marine mammals, such as sea lions and common dolphins. Lawler did not reveal the name of the island where the encounter occurred.<\/p>\n
