{"id":426348,"date":"2026-01-24T04:19:16","date_gmt":"2026-01-24T04:19:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/426348\/"},"modified":"2026-01-24T04:19:16","modified_gmt":"2026-01-24T04:19:16","slug":"debt-war-us-has-escalation-dominance-as-europe-would-face-a-violent-crash-if-it-dumps-treasuries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/426348\/","title":{"rendered":"Debt war: US has &#8216;escalation dominance&#8217; as Europe would face a violent crash if it dumps Treasuries"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>President Donald Trump retreated from this threat to impose tariffs on NATO allies in response to his plan to take over Greenland, but the damage has been done, diplomatically and financially.<\/p>\n<p>The dollar has continued to sink, and top investors in Northern Europe are reportedly <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/finance\/big-north-european-investors-reassess-us-exposure-geopolitical-risk-mounts-2026-01-22\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/finance\/big-north-european-investors-reassess-us-exposure-geopolitical-risk-mounts-2026-01-22\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/finance\/big-north-european-investors-reassess-us-exposure-geopolitical-risk-mounts-2026-01-22\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">re-evaluating their exposure to U.S. assets<\/a>, while Danish pension funds have already dumped Treasury bonds. <\/p>\n<p>Part of that is because of concerns over U.S. debt, but Trump\u2019s Greenland crisis and his continued unpredictability have also fueled calls for Europe to weaponize its capital. In fact, <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2026\/01\/18\/europe-retaliation-8-trillion-sell-america-us-debt-bonds-stocks-trade-war-greenland-trump\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2026\/01\/18\/europe-retaliation-8-trillion-sell-america-us-debt-bonds-stocks-trade-war-greenland-trump\/\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2026\/01\/18\/europe-retaliation-8-trillion-sell-america-us-debt-bonds-stocks-trade-war-greenland-trump\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">European investors own $8 trillion<\/a> in U.S. stocks and bonds, with $3.6 trillion of that in Treasury debt alone.<\/p>\n<p>Europe accounts for about a third of U.S. government bonds held overseas, or roughly 10% of the overall Treasury market, after nearly doubling its holdings since 2019, according to a note Wednesday from Capital Economics.<\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019s precisely this massive stockpile that makes it unlikely Europeans will suddenly sell Treasuries, because moving around that much money would roil financial markets.<\/p>\n<p>Why the U.S. has \u2018escalation dominance\u2019 <\/p>\n<p>Shifting into alternative investments would send those prices soaring and reduce their expected returns, the note said.
