Brazilian President Luiz Inacio \u201cLula\u201d da Silva has accused his United States counterpart Donald Trump of wanting to create \u201ca new UN\u201d, days after the US president launched his new \u201cBoard of Peace\u201d initiative in Switzerland.<\/p>\n
\u201cInstead of fixing\u201d the United Nations, \u201cwhat\u2019s happening? President Trump is proposing to create a new UN where only he is the owner,\u201d Lula said in a speech on Friday.<\/p>\n

Speaking in Rio Grande do Sul, Lula also said that Trump \u201cwants to run the world through Twitter\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s remarkable. Every day he says something, and every day the world is talking about what he said,\u201d Lula said, according to Brazil\u2019s Folha de Sao Paulo newspaper.<\/p>\n
Lula defended multilateralism against what he called \u201cthe law of the jungle\u201d in global affairs and warned that \u201cthe UN charter is being torn\u201d.<\/p>\n
Lula\u2019s remarks come a day after he spoke by phone with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, who urged his Brazilian counterpart to safeguard the \u201ccentral role\u201d of the UN in international affairs.<\/p>\n
His comments also come as the White House withdraws the US from dozens of UN bodies<\/a> and Trump launches his \u201cBoard of Peace\u201d<\/a>, while imposing his \u201cAmerica First\u201d agenda on global politics and trade through tariffs and military threats to such a degree that allies of Washington question whether they can now trust the US.<\/p>\n Trump launched the board with a signing ceremony in Davos, Switzerland, on Thursday, during the annual summit of the World Economic Forum<\/a>, another international body that has increasingly presented itself as an alternative to the UN system.<\/p>\n Members of the board<\/a> include Israel\u2019s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is accused of war crimes by the\u00a0International Criminal Court and whose forces have killed more than 300 staff members from the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, in Gaza.<\/p>\n The US originally said that the \u201cBoard of Peace\u201d would oversee the rebuilding of Gaza after more than two years of Israel\u2019s genocidal war on the besieged enclave, but the board\u2019s 11-page charter does not mention Gaza, suggesting its interests may have expanded in scope.<\/p>\n The UN, which was created in the wake of World War II, has said it is experiencing funding shortfalls for its humanitarian<\/a> and human rights<\/a> activities, as the US and other Western countries redirect funding away from international aid towards military spending<\/a>.<\/p>\n The world body operates on a regular budget of about $3.72bn annually, of which the US was required to contribute $820m in 2025, although it has fallen behind on payments<\/a> under the Trump administration.<\/p>\n
