NWS forecasters were particularly concerned about freezing rain and ice, warning that &#8220;catastrophic ice accumulations are expected from the Southern Plains to the Southeast\/Mid-Atlantic.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Whenever we see these big ice events, we&#8217;ll see various hazards; obviously bridges and overpasses being frozen over, and with trees and various different things that could fall into the roadways or potentially fall on houses,&#8221; said Nicholas Price, an NWS meteorologist in Texas.<\/p>\n<p>Travel will also be severely affected with over <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ap.org\/detail\/Over8000flightscanceledasmajorwinterstormbearsdownacrossmuchoftheUS\/a94c9d155615333a50e174a4d7d54fc1\/text\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">8,000 flights cancelled<\/a> across the U.S. this weekend.<\/p>\n<p>Reporters from across the NPR Network are covering the storm in each state \u2014 the impact and how officials are responding. We&#8217;ve also got tips for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2026\/01\/21\/nx-s1-5684331\/winter-storm-extreme-cold-watch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">interpreting<\/a> different weather notices, protecting your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/02\/05\/1078334782\/home-tips-winter-weather\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">home<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/01\/05\/1070675066\/winter-storm-driving-safety-tips\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">vehicle<\/a> ahead of time, and for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/01\/09\/nx-s1-5251474\/winter-snow-tips#:~:text=You%27re%20safest%20at%20home,help%20keep%20dogs%27%20paws%20happy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">staying safe<\/a> once the storm hits.<\/p>\n<p>First, some advice from past cold blasts:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>   The kind of cold the U.S. is experiencing this weekend can be dangerous and even deadly. Here are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/health-shots\/2019\/01\/30\/690170470\/medical-effects-of-extreme-cold-why-it-hurts-and-how-to-stay-safe#:~:text=First%2C%20check%20the%20temperature%20outside,be%20stronger%20than%20the%20environment.%22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">some precautions to take<\/a> if you have to go outside.Animals also are at risk when out in the cold for prolonged periods. Take extra care to keep them <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2018\/01\/03\/575321841\/how-cold-is-too-cold-for-pets\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">warm<\/a> in the cold weather.\u00a0   <\/p>\n<p>Alabama\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>   Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey issued a state of emergency for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apr.org\/news\/2026-01-23\/governor-ivey-issues-emergency-declaration-ahead-of-icy-weekend\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">19 northern counties<\/a> ahead of the storm.&#8221;In Alabama, we are no stranger to Mother Nature,&#8221; Ivey said. &#8220;However, when it comes to winter weather, we are not as familiar. So, as we head into this weekend, I am urging my fellow Alabamians, especially in the northern part of our state, to stay weather aware.&#8221;   <\/p>\n<p>Arkansas\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>   Gov. Ned Lamont activated the state&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/portal.ct.gov\/governor\/news\/press-releases\/2026\/01-2026\/governor-lamont-activates-severe-cold-weather-protocol-friday-afternoon?language=en_US\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Severe Cold Weather Protocol<\/a>, which helps people find shelter space and provide transportation to shelters.Parts of the state could get more than a foot of snow. &#8220;This is the real McCoy,&#8221; Lamont <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctpublic.org\/news\/2026-01-22\/winter-storm-connecticut-snow-accumulation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said<\/a>. He added that some 650 plows and 900 drivers as well as 250 utility crews are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wshu.org\/connecticut-news\/2026-01-23\/ct-snow-storm-preparation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">ready to respond<\/a>.   <\/p>\n<p>Georgia<\/p>\n<p>   Gov. Brian Kemp declared a state of emergency on Thursday. His <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gpb.org\/news\/2026\/01\/22\/gov-kemp-declares-state-of-emergency-gema-director-advises-stocking-on-essentials\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">emergency order<\/a> allows for 500 Georgia National Guard troops to be deployed as needed. It also &#8220;prohibits price gouging; suspends hours-of-service limitations for commercial vehicle operators involved in response activities; and temporarily increases weight, height, and length limits for commercial vehicles transporting essential supplies.&#8221;The University of Georgia urged students <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wuga.org\/local-news\/2026-01-23\/uga-advises-students-to-return-home-ahead-of-winter-storm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">to return home<\/a> after their classes Friday.   <\/p>\n<p>Indiana\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Kentucky<\/p>\n<p>   The National Weather Service says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weku.org\/the-commonwealth\/2026-01-22\/central-eastern-kentucky-snowfall-could-rival-2016-meteorologist-says\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">central and eastern Kentucky<\/a> could get the most snow they&#8217;ve seen in 10 years.In the city of Lexington, the storm &#8220;will more than likely take its place among the top ten&#8221; since 1887, says Emergency Management Director Rob Larkin.Periods of heavy sleet are predicted to hit western Kentucky with freezing rain mixed in, including some sleet accumulation and up to a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.krcu.org\/krcu-local-newscasts\/2026-01-20\/late-week-winter-storm-system-headed-for-southeast-missouri-predicted-to-bring-significant-precipitation-more-bitter-cold\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> light glaze of freezing rain<\/a>.Gov. Andy Beshear <a href=\"https:\/\/governor.ky.gov\/attachments\/20260123_Executive-Order_2026-047_State-of-Emergency-Related-to-Continuing-Winter-Weather-Event.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">declared<\/a> a state of emergency.\u00a0The head of the Kentucky Emergency Management agency<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lpm.org\/news\/2026-01-23\/preparations-imperative-ahead-of-a-potentially-historic-winter-storm-in-kentucky-tennessee-west-virginia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> said the National Guard and other personnel<\/a> stand ready to clear roads and help provide shelter to those who need it.Kentucky Utilities has an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wuky.org\/wuky-news\/2026-01-22\/ku-offering-text-alerts-regarding-power-outages-restoration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">instant text and call alert service<\/a> to inform customers about outages.In Fayette County, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wuky.org\/wuky-news\/2026-01-23\/camp-hero-offers-fayette-county-healthcare-workers-free-rides-during-the-winter-storm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">nonprofit group Camp Hero<\/a> is offering free rides for healthcare workers from Saturday afternoon through Monday.   <\/p>\n<p>Louisiana\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>   Louisiana Gov. Gov. Mike Kehoe has declared <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksmu.org\/news\/2026-01-23\/missouri-governor-issues-state-of-emergency-ahead-of-winter-storm-fern\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">a state of emergency<\/a>.\u00a0The storm comes amid an already very <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stlpr.org\/health-science-environment\/2026-01-23\/tornadoes-rainfall-extreme-weather-climate-story-2025-missouri-illinois\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">chaotic climate year <\/a>for St. Louis.St. Louis is piloting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stlpr.org\/government-politics-issues\/2026-01-22\/st-louis-piloting-new-plowing-protocol-adding-emergency-beds-severe-weather\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">a new plowing protocol <\/a>and adding emergency beds ahead of severe weather. Streets Department Director James Jackson said the city aims to have all main roadways open in 48 to 72 hours.As precipitation starts to fall, the Missouri Department of Transportation&#8217;s team will be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksmu.org\/news\/2026-01-22\/state-agencies-urge-people-to-prepare-ahead-of-a-major-winter-storm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">fully deployed<\/a> across the state, &#8220;3,000 folks working two shifts a day until this is back to near normal conditions.&#8221; Additional Crisis Cold Weather Shelters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksmu.org\/news\/2026-01-22\/additional-crisis-cold-weather-shelters-will-be-open-this-weekend-as-frigid-conditions-move-in\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">will be open this weekend.<\/a>Bonus: St. Louis Public Radio has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stlpr.org\/culture-history\/2026-01-23\/claire-saffitz-ozzys-joe-stein-french-toast-recipes-st-louis-snowstorm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">recipe recommendation<\/a> to help you warm up in the cold.   <\/p>\n<p>Nebraska<\/p>\n<p>   Dozens of school districts across the state heeded the warnings and canceled Friday classes, including Ainsworth in the Panhandle to Ord in central Nebraska and Lincoln Public Schools and Omaha Public Schools.\u00a0Several cities, including Lincoln and Omaha, are <a href=\"https:\/\/nebraskapublicmedia.org\/en\/news\/news-articles\/schools-cancel-warming-centers-open-as-dangerously-cold-weather-moves-in\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">activating warming centers<\/a> for people seeking a reprieve from the frigid temperatures.\u00a0   <\/p>\n<p>New Hampshire<\/p>\n<p>   New Hampshire Public Radio<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhpr.org\/nh-news\/2023-02-01\/how-to-prepare-for-extreme-cold-in-nh-emergency-shelter-info-safety-tips-and-more\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> has resources<\/a> for finding shelters and staying safe as the state braces for extreme cold.   <\/p>\n<p>New York<\/p>\n<p>North Carolina\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>   Ahead of a winter storm, Gov. Josh Stein is warning North Carolinians<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wunc.org\/term\/news\/2026-01-22\/gov-stein-stay-off-roads-over-the-weekend-finish-preparing-for-winter-storm-by-friday-evening\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> to stay off the roads<\/a> over the weekend. They should also prepare to go without power for a few days as ice-laden tree limbs threaten to drag down power lines.\u00a0NCDOT crews are currently brining roads, but officials said travel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.publicradioeast.org\/2026-01-23\/concern-shifts-to-icy-conditions-as-winter-storm-approaches-eastern-north-carolina\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">will become extremely hazardous<\/a> Saturday night through early next week.National Weather Service Meteorologist Tom Green says the precipitation moving into the Piedmont on Saturday may begin as snow, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wfdd.org\/weather\/2026-01-22\/a-winter-storm-will-bring-wide-ranging-precipitation-to-the-piedmont-this-weekend\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">but that might change:<\/a> &#8220;As things end up evolving Saturday evening and Saturday night, we&#8217;re expecting that that will likely transition to a period of sleet and freezing rain.&#8221;   <\/p>\n<p>For more tips and resources in North Carolina, head to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wncw.org\/2026-01-22\/winter-storm-prep-tips\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">WNCW<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Ohio\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>   The National Weather Service predicts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wosu.org\/2026-01-22\/national-weather-service-predicts-up-to-a-foot-of-snow-for-columbus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">eight inches to a foot <\/a>of snow in central Ohio this weekend. Forecasters urge people to run errands and stock up on supplies <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wyso.org\/news\/2026-01-23\/winter-storm-heavy-snow-expected-this-weekend-in-southwest-ohio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">before Saturday <\/a>afternoon, when the snow is expected to begin.   As extremely cold temperatures grip Northeast Ohio, emergency doctors are warning that frostbite can develop faster than many parents realize, especially in children.&#8221;Thirty minutes or less typically is all the time that&#8217;s required to develop frostbite in exposed individuals when the windchill is near zero,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ideastream.org\/health\/2026-01-22\/how-to-avoid-frostbite-for-kids-in-northeast-ohios-extreme-cold\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said MetroHealth emergency physician Dr. Jeremiah Escajeda<\/a>. He&#8217;s prepared to call in additional contractors and haulers to deal with the snow. The weekend storm is on track to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wesa.fm\/local-headlines\/2026-01-23\/pittsburgh-weekend-snow-forecast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the most significant winter storm <\/a>in Pittsburgh in five years, and possibly as many as 15.&#8221;We&#8217;ll be on the northwest fringe of this storm track where the heavy snow will be occurring,&#8221; NWS meteorologist Chris Leonardi <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wesa.fm\/local-headlines\/2026-01-22\/pittsburgh-heavy-snow-weekend\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said of Pittsburgh<\/a>.Central Pennsylvania will also see <a href=\"https:\/\/radio.wpsu.org\/2026-01-22\/double-digit-snowfall-and-cold-temperatures-likely-in-central-pa-this-weekend\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">double-digit snowfall<\/a> and cold temperatures.\u00a0   <\/p>\n<p>Tennessee\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>   The City of Memphis <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wknofm.org\/weather\/2026-01-23\/city-of-memphis-prepares-for-potentially-hazardous-winter-weather\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">told residents<\/a> to plan for dangerous travel, potential power outages, and disruptions to water service.Weather forecasters are currently monitoring the potential for ice accumulation, which poses a greater danger than snow and cannot be effectively cleared by snow plows.   <\/p>\n<p>Texas<\/p>\n<p>   Texas Gov.
