Donald Trump<\/a> on Saturday said he would impose a 100% tariff on all Canadian imports if the North American country makes a trade deal with China<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Beside that tariff threat, another Trump foreign policy maneuver to make news on Saturday involved the president announcing the US had taken the oil that was on recently seized Venezuelan<\/a> tankers.<\/p>\n

The US president wrote on social media that if the Canadian prime minister, Mark Carney, \u201cthinks he is going to make Canada<\/a> a \u2018Drop Off Port\u2019 for China to send goods and products into the United States, he is sorely mistaken\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cChina will eat Canada alive, completely devour it, including the destruction of their businesses, social fabric, and general way of life,\u201d Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform. \u201cIf Canada makes a deal with China<\/a>, it will immediately be hit with a 100% Tariff against all Canadian goods and products coming into the [US].\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump has repeatedly invoked tariffs in a bid to bend countries to his will \u2013 with some success, though he also repeatedly backed down<\/a> from his most extreme tariff-related threats.<\/p>\n

Notably, days earlier, Trump walked back his threat to impose sweeping tariffs on several European countries in order to facilitate the US\u2019s acquisition of Greenland, the semiautonomous Danish Arctic island which the president has been fixated on. Trump claimed he had reached \u201cthe framework of a future deal\u201d on Greenland.<\/p>\n

In a New York Post interview published<\/a> on Saturday, Trump boasted that the US will gain sovereignty and take ownership over land in Greenland where American bases are located.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll have everything we want,\u201d Trump reportedly told the Post. \u201cWe have some interesting talks going on.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, in the same Post interview published on Saturday, Trump said<\/a> US refineries will process the oil which his administration had taken from seized Venezuelan tankers.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s put it this way \u2013 they don\u2019t have any oil,\u201d Trump told the Post. \u201cWe take the oil.\u201d<\/p>\n

The oil is being refined in \u201cvarious places\u201d including Houston, he said.<\/p>\n

The US military has seized<\/a> seven Venezuela-linked tankers since the start of Trump\u2019s month-long campaign to control Venezuela\u2019s oil flows. Trump said on Tuesday that his administration had taken 50m barrels of oil out of Venezuela and was selling some of it in the open market.<\/p>\n

The intercepted vessels either were under US sanctions or said to be part of a \u201cshadow fleet\u201d of ships that disguise<\/a> their origins to move oil from major sanctioned producers \u2013 Iran, Russia or Venezuela.<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s Latin American foreign policy has homed in on Venezuela, initially aiming to push the Venezuelan president, Nicol\u00e1s Maduro<\/a>, from power. After failing to accomplish that aim through diplomacy, Trump ordered US forces to fly into the country to grab Maduro and his wife in an overnight raid on 3 January, bringing them to New York to face criminal drug-related charges and detaining them<\/a> there.<\/p>\n

In Saturday\u2019s interview with the Post, Trump bragged that a new weapon he called \u201cthe discombobulator\u201d played a central role in that raid.<\/p>\n

Those remarks came after the White House press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, shared<\/a> on social media a purported eyewitness account of the US military using some sort of \u201cvery intense sound wave\u201d to incapacitate Maduro\u2019s bodyguards.<\/p>\n
