{"id":427775,"date":"2026-01-24T21:35:13","date_gmt":"2026-01-24T21:35:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/427775\/"},"modified":"2026-01-24T21:35:13","modified_gmt":"2026-01-24T21:35:13","slug":"trump-threatens-100-percent-tariff-on-canada-over-china-deal-international-trade-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/427775\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump threatens 100 percent tariff on Canada over China deal | International Trade News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__subhead\">Donald Trump\u2019s threat comes after Canada reached deal with China last week on trade of agriproducts, electric vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>Montreal, Canada \u2013 United States President Donald Trump has threatened to impose a 100 percent tariff against Canada if Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney moves ahead with an announced trade <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/economy\/2026\/1\/16\/canada-china-strike-trade-deals-to-slash-tariffs-on-evs-canola\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">deal with China<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement shared on Truth Social on Saturday morning, Trump said Carney is \u201csorely mistaken\u201d if he thinks Canada can become a \u201c\u2018Drop Off Port\u2019 for China to send goods and products into the United States\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Recommended Stories list of 3 itemsend of list<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Canada makes a deal with China, it will immediately be hit with a 100% Tariff against all Canadian goods and products coming into the U.S.A,\u201d Trump wrote in the post, which referred to Carney as \u201cgovernor\u201d instead of prime minister.<\/p>\n<p>Carney\u2019s office did not immediately respond to Al Jazeera\u2019s request for comment on Trump\u2019s remarks.<\/p>\n<p>The Canadian minister responsible for Canada-US trade, Dominic LeBlanc, said on X later on Saturday that \u201cthere is no pursuit of a free trade deal with China\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, he described a deal announced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/economy\/2026\/1\/16\/us-says-canada-will-regret-decision-to-allow-chinese-evs-into-their-market\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">last week<\/a> between Ottawa and Beijing as a \u201cresolution on several important tariff issues\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCanada\u2019s new government is building a stronger Canadian economy, with a plan that is building our strength at home and strengthening our trading partnerships throughout the world,\u201d LeBlanc said.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s tariffs threat comes as tensions mounted between Canada and the US this week after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/economy\/2026\/1\/21\/rupture-in-the-world-order-speeches-by-carney-world-leaders-at-davos\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Carney<\/a> delivered an address at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, that was widely seen as a rebuke of the Trump administration\u2019s policies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are in the midst of a rupture, not a transition,\u201d Carney said in the speech, urging the world\u2019s \u201cmiddle powers\u201d to deepen cooperation in the face of coercion and threats.<\/p>\n<p>The prime minister\u2019s remarks drew the ire of Trump, who responded by saying\u00a0that \u201cCanada lives because of the United States\u201d. \u201cRemember that, Mark, the next time you make your statements,\u201d he said in Davos.<\/p>\n<p>Trump also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/1\/23\/rights-advocates-welcome-canadas-exclusion-from-trump-board-of-peace\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">revoked an invitation for Carney<\/a> to join his so-called \u201cBoard of Peace\u201d this week.<\/p>\n<p>The US president has been threatening to impose steep levies on Canadian goods since before he formally came into office in January 2025, while he has repeatedly said he wants Canada to become the US\u2019s \u201c51st state\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>That has plunged ties between the North American neighbours to historic lows, and pushed Carney in recent months to seek out new economic partnerships, including with China, the European Union and Qatar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is all part of Mr Carney\u2019s goal to lessen [Canada\u2019s] reliance on the United States,\u201d Asa McKercher, a professor at St Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia specialised in Canada-US relations, told Al Jazeera after the Davos speech.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/3\/9\/who-is-mark-carney-canadas-new-liberal-leader-and-next-prime-minister\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">He\u2019s a banker<\/a>, so any sort of \u2018diversified portfolio\u2019 lessens our risk to certain shocks.
