Speaking with Mamamia<\/a>, the woman, identified only as Jillian, said she noticed a growth on her nose, but her busy lifestyle, balancing family and her career<\/a> as a schoolteacher, kept her from getting it checked out.<\/p>\n One day, Jillian told the outlet that a student told her, “You’ve got funny red lines on your nose,” which prompted her to schedule an appointment with her general practitioner, who then referred her to a specialist.<\/p>\n That medical professional, Jillian told Mamamia, advised her to stop using her decongestant spray\u00a0and sent her on her way after only nine minutes.<\/p>\n Never miss a story \u2014 sign up for PEOPLE’s free daily newsletter<\/a> to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer\u200b\u200b, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.<\/p>\n Getty<\/p>\n Doctors performing surgery (stock image).<\/p>\n According to Jillian, she doesn’t always put her health first<\/a>, so she thought nothing of it initially. “I don’t normally listen to my body,” she admitted to Mamamia. “It tells me a lot of different things, so it’s hard to know.”<\/p>\n Still, despite the specialist’s dismissal, Jillian kept an eye on her nose, and over time, she said the red lines became brighter and she eventually developed a lump<\/a>.<\/p>\n She eventually sought out a different skin specialist, whom Mamamia reported took biopsies and then referred her to a general surgeon, who told Jillian her medical dilemma was “self-contained” and had “its own blood supply.”<\/p>\n Jillian subsequently went for several more biopsies, all while she said she was unable to breathe out of one nostril. “If you looked at me, you couldn’t actually see the lump. Play now!<\/a><\/p>\n Jillian eventually did a final biopsy, which determined she had skin cancer<\/a>. It also found that the growth had hardened.<\/p>\n “The surgeons didn’t know where the edges of the cancer were, and they were trying to be conservative and not take more than they had to,” Jillian explained to Mamamia. “So, for the first surgery, they just took what looked cancerous to them.”<\/p>\n Jillian had to undergo numerous follow-up surgeries after the first, and she admitted that each took a toll on her. “Hearing after the first one, ‘No, that actually wasn’t enough, we need to do it again,’ was really quite devastating,” she told Mamamia.<\/p>\n “I knew when they brought the tissue box over before the doctor came and saw me that it was not good news,” she added. “I got a bit numb. It was just, ‘No, we need to go back and do more.’ And that was really hard to hear every time. The more they took out, the more I didn’t feel like myself. I didn’t know who I felt like.”<\/p>\n Getty<\/p>\n A woman upset in a hospital (stock image).<\/p>\n After her growth was removed and she received radiation treatment, Jillian underwent various plastic surgery procedures to reconstruct her face<\/a>. “I didn’t even know plastic surgeons did that sort of thing. I thought they were all the boobs and [butts],”\u00a0she joked to Mamamia.<\/p>\n Her last procedure occurred in November. Jillian told the outlet, “It was really good to feel more like myself and have a bit more confidence in myself. That was really, really important to feel a bit more normal.”<\/p>\n Now, it could take up to 12 months for Jillian’s swelling to go down. She will then have to undergo bi-annual MRIs, to make sure her skin cancer hasn’t returned<\/a>.<\/p>\n Looking back at her healthy journey, Jillian told Mamamia she has once key piece of advice to share with others: “You need to listen to yourself.
