JoJo Siwa<\/a>\u2019s new cover of \u201cBette Davis Eyes<\/a>\u201d doesn\u2019t appear to be resonating with singer Kim Carnes, who first made the song famous 44 years ago. <\/p>\n

Carnes seemingly dismissed Siwa\u2019s rendition of \u201cBette Davis Eyes\u201d while sharing a throwback clip of the original 1981 music video<\/a> for the song in a since-deleted TikTok Wednesday. <\/p>\n

\u201cThere is a difference between singing a song…. And embodying it….\u201d Carnes wrote in the post, which was captured for posterity on the New York Post\u2019s<\/a> Page Six<\/a>, among other outlets, as well as on social media<\/a>.<\/p>\n

She went on to note, \u201cI\u2019m forever grateful to be the voice behind this one….. Bette Davis Eyes.\u201d<\/p>\n

Carnes, who resides in Nashville, Tennessee, didn\u2019t mention Siwa by name in the post. However, Siwa had by then already been<\/a> teasing<\/a> the Friday release of her \u201cBette Davis Eyes\u201d cover on social media<\/a>. <\/p>\n

The 22-year-old singer, actor and YouTube superstar has also performed the song<\/a> on tour this year, notably changing the lyrics to \u201cChris Hughes\u2019 eyes\u201d at several concerts \u2015 a nod to her real-life boyfriend, \u201cLove Island\u201d contestant Chris Hughes<\/a>. <\/p>\n

A representative for Siwa did not immediately respond to HuffPost\u2019s request for comment on Carnes\u2019 remark. <\/p>\n

Carnes\u2019 version of \u201cBette Davis Eyes\u201d held the No. 1 spot on the Billboard charts for nine weeks in 1981, later winning<\/a> Grammy Awards for Record of the Year and Song of the Year. <\/p>\n

Given the smash success of Carnes\u2019 version, fans may be surprised to learn the song was originally recorded by singer-songwriter Jackie DeShannon<\/a>, who co-wrote it with Donna Weiss for her 1975 album, \u201cNew Arrangement.\u201d <\/p>\n

More recently, Leighton Meester<\/a> and Gwyneth Paltrow<\/a> have covered the song, while Taylor Swift<\/a> performed it live<\/a> on her 2011 Speak Now World Tour. <\/p>\n

Despite Carnes\u2019 seemingly less-than-positive thoughts on Siwa\u2019s cover of \u201cBette Davis Eyes,\u201d the new version appears to be contributing to the song\u2019s surprise resurgence<\/a> across the pop culture spectrum this summer. <\/p>\n

On Thursday, Carnes\u2019 version was played<\/a> during a steamy scene on \u201cAnd Just Like That…<\/a>,\u201d HBO Max\u2019s \u201cSex and the City\u201d revival series. <\/p>\n

And last week, singer-songwriter Ethel Cain released a new single, \u201cFuck Me Eyes,\u201d with third-person lyrics that seem directly inspired by \u201cBette Davis Eyes.\u201d She even paid tribute to Carnes in an Instagram post<\/a> announcing the song\u2019s release.<\/p>\n
