Keep an eye on weather forecasts and emergency alerts from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usa.gov\/agencies\/national-weather-service\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.usa.gov\/agencies\/national-weather-service\">National Weather Service<\/a> (NWS) or trusted mobile apps. Early warnings can give you valuable time to prepare.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">A well\u2011stocked emergency kit is also crucial. The NWS recommends having the following items on hand: <\/p>\n<p>Flashlight and extra batteriesBattery\u2011powered portable radio for emergency updatesExtra food and water, such as nuts, dried fruit, granola bars, and other no\u2011cook, non\u2011perishable itemsMedicationsBaby supplies like diapers and formulaFirst\u2011aid kitHeating fuelBackup heat source: fireplace, wood stove, or properly ventilated space heaterFire extinguisher and working smoke alarmExtra food and warm shelter for petsGenerator (always used outdoors)<\/p>\n<p>How to stay safe during a power outage<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">If a storm threatens to knock out power, unplug electronics and appliances to prevent damage when electricity returns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">When temperatures drop indoors, keep all exterior doors closed. Use towels to block drafts coming through door and window gaps. Heavy blankets can also help insulate windows.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The NWS recommends dressing in loose, warm layers and eating foods that help your body generate heat.
