Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas were among the hardest hit.<\/p>\n<p>States from Missouri to Maine were under a winter storm warning on Sunday. National Weather Service forecasters were particularly concerned about freezing rain and ice.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Whenever we see these big ice events, we&#8217;ll see various hazards; obviously bridges and overpasses being frozen over, and with trees and various different things that could fall into the roadways or potentially fall on houses,&#8221; Nicholas Price, an NWS meteorologist in Texas, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2026\/01\/24\/nx-s1-5687179\/as-the-winter-storm-rages-heres-what-to-know-in-your-state\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">told NPR earlier<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The storm severely disrupted air travel. By Sunday evening, over 11,000 flights had been canceled in the U.S. and more than 4,700 were delayed, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flightaware.com\/live\/cancelled\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">FlightAware<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Officials in multiple states also warned drivers to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary.<\/p>\n<p>Reporters from across the NPR Network are covering the storm in each state \u2014 the impact and how officials are responding. We&#8217;ve also got tips for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2026\/01\/21\/nx-s1-5684331\/winter-storm-extreme-cold-watch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">interpreting<\/a> different weather notices, protecting your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/02\/05\/1078334782\/home-tips-winter-weather\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">home<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/01\/05\/1070675066\/winter-storm-driving-safety-tips\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">vehicle<\/a> ahead of time, and for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/01\/09\/nx-s1-5251474\/winter-snow-tips#:~:text=You%27re%20safest%20at%20home,help%20keep%20dogs%27%20paws%20happy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">staying safe<\/a> once the storm hits.<\/p>\n<p>   Alabama Northwest portions of the state, including Lauderdale County, are some of the areas impacted most by the storm.Under 2,000 people are without power in western parts of Lauderdale County, according to Lauderdale County Emergency Management Agency Director Brad Holmes. Up to an inch of ice has accumulated on power lines and trees, with over 100 trees reported down across roadways throughout the county, Holmes told NPR on Sunday. About 11 vehicles got stuck or slid off the road, with at least three crashes, while five people have been transported to the hospital because of falls, Holmes also said.Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey issued a <a href=\"https:\/\/governor.alabama.gov\/newsroom\/2026\/01\/state-of-emergency-winter-weather-6\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">state of emergency<\/a> and activated the Alabama National Guard. More than 350 service members have been activated and are assisting efforts in North Alabama, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/alabamang\/status\/2015207493538869429?s=12&amp;t=zqhVQvPMIcoxuuo4LPBNMw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Alabama National Guard<\/a>.The Alabama Department of Transportation on Sunday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aldotnews.com\/2026\/01\/25\/aldot-prepares-for-icy-roads-in-north-alabama\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">urged people<\/a> to &#8220;avoid travel after temperatures drop and wait for conditions to improve.&#8221;ArkansasGov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders <a href=\"https:\/\/governor.arkansas.gov\/executive_orders\/sanders-declares-emergency-for-severe-winter-weather-expected-on-or-about-january-23-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">declared a state of emergency<\/a> Thursday and deployed at least 170 national guard service members to assist with the storm. The Arkansas National Guard said it was assisting Arkansas State Police.\u00a0ConnecticutDelaware By Sunday afternoon, several areas had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weather.gov\/source\/crh\/snowmap.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">recorded more than 6 inches<\/a> of snow.\u00a0Gov. Matt Meyer urged residents to stay home. &#8220;This is not a let-me-run-out-to-the-convenience-store-real-quick kind of storm,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MattMeyerDE\/status\/2015443249280811333\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">he said<\/a> in a video on social media. &#8220;Let&#8217;s do everything we can to keep each other safe.&#8221;Beginning Sunday morning in New Castle and Kent Counties, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MattMeyerDE\/status\/2015422597970665556\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">driving was limited<\/a> to emergency workers, public utilities, health care providers, snow removal operations, food and fuel deliveries and those with approved waivers.\u00a0Department of Transportation Community Relations Director <a href=\"https:\/\/www.delawarepublic.org\/politics-government\/2026-01-23\/deldot-braces-for-this-weekends-winter-storm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">C.R. McLeod said<\/a> staff brined roads statewide on Friday to get ahead of freezing conditions once precipitation began.District of Columbia GeorgiaThe storm brought freezing rain, sleet, and snow to parts of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gpb.org\/news\/2026\/01\/25\/updates-parts-of-georgia-in-icy-grip-winter-storm-rolls-through-heres-what-know\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">northern and middle Georgia<\/a>. A winter storm warning is in effect through Monday.The University of Georgia closed its campus and announced that all in-person classes, campus events and activities <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wuga.org\/local-news\/2026-01-24\/uga-campus-closed-ahead-of-ice-storm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">will be canceled<\/a> on Monday. If you can, please stay home. If you must drive, slow down, don&#8217;t crowd the plow, and give our crews plenty of space to work safely,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/idot_illinois\/status\/2015486561802953081?s=12&amp;t=zqhVQvPMIcoxuuo4LPBNMw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">the agency said on Sunday<\/a>.   Indiana   The NWS warned of frostbite and said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weather.gov\/iwx\/weatherstory\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">wind chills could reach<\/a> 20 degrees below zero on Monday in northern Indiana.\u00a0The Indiana Department of Transportation <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/indot\/status\/2015489733544054997?s=12&amp;t=zqhVQvPMIcoxuuo4LPBNMw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">said Sunday<\/a> there have been &#8220;multiple reports of crashes and slide-offs&#8221; and is urging people to stay off the roads.Indiana&#8217;s electric grid operator declared a <a href=\"https:\/\/news.wnin.org\/2026-01-24\/amid-snowstorm-utilities-ask-for-conservation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">conservation alert<\/a>, asking customers to conserve energy and prepare for the possibility of &#8220;planned outages.&#8221;Parts of Indiana recorded <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weather.gov\/source\/crh\/snowmap.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">more than 12 inches<\/a> of snow by mid-day Sunday and forecasters warned of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weather.gov\/iwx\/weatherstory\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">another 1-3 inches<\/a> late Sunday into Monday in the northern part of the state. Andy Beshear <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GovAndyBeshear\/status\/2015485257735164108?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">said on Sunday<\/a>.\u00a0There are 113 warming centers across the commonwealth, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kentucky.gov\/Pages\/Activity-stream.aspx?n=GovernorBeshear&amp;prId=2674\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according to officials<\/a>.The NWS says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weku.org\/the-commonwealth\/2026-01-22\/central-eastern-kentucky-snowfall-could-rival-2016-meteorologist-says\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">central and eastern Kentucky<\/a> could get the most snow they&#8217;ve seen in 10 years. Ice accumulations are more than expected, Beshear said.In the city of Lexington, the storm &#8220;will more than likely take its place among the top 10&#8221; since 1887, says Emergency Management Director Rob Larkin.Kentucky Utilities has an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wuky.org\/wuky-news\/2026-01-22\/ku-offering-text-alerts-regarding-power-outages-restoration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">instant text and call alert service<\/a> to inform customers about outages.LouisianaMore than 140,000 customers were without <a href=\"https:\/\/poweroutage.us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">power on Sunday afternoon<\/a>.Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry declared a <a href=\"https:\/\/gov.louisiana.gov\/news\/5027\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">state of emergency<\/a>, which his office says &#8220;activates the State&#8217;s emergency response and recovery program, allowing for direct state assistance to support operational measures at the parish level.&#8221;In the northern city of Monroe, Mayor Friday Ellis <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kedm.org\/kedm-news\/2026-01-23\/mayor-friday-ellis-declares-state-of-emergency-ahead-of-winter-weather\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">declared<\/a> a state of emergency.   <\/p>\n<p>For more resources on Louisiana, head to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kedm.org\/kedm-news\/2026-01-23\/city-of-west-monroe-prepares-for-winter-weather-this-weekend\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">KEDM<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>   MaineSnow was expected to pick up in the far northern state Sunday afternoon, but the <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NWSGray\/status\/2015450373113118899\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">NWS office in Gray said<\/a> Sunday morning that it had already received reports of light snow and flurries.Wind chills could reach <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NWSGray\/status\/2015131221332799874\/photo\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">25 below zero<\/a> on Sunday through Monday. &#8220;Probably the coldest temperatures are going to be seen up north and across the Western Maine mountains,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mainepublic.org\/maine\/2026-01-22\/subzero-temperatures-expected-for-much-of-maineeres-how-to-prepare\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said Steven Baron<\/a>, a meteorologist in Gray.Snow was forecast to fall Sunday afternoon through Monday evening.MarylandGov. Gov. He said the biggest issue the state is seeing is downed trees due to freezing rain.\u00a0MissouriNebraskaSeveral cities, including Lincoln and Omaha, are <a href=\"https:\/\/nebraskapublicmedia.org\/en\/news\/news-articles\/schools-cancel-warming-centers-open-as-dangerously-cold-weather-moves-in\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">activating warming centers<\/a> for people seeking a reprieve from the frigid temperatures.\u00a0New HampshireAs the Granite State braces for extreme cold, including temperatures of -30 degrees and wind gusts of up to 100 miles per hour, New Hampshire Public Radio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhpr.org\/nh-news\/2023-02-01\/how-to-prepare-for-extreme-cold-in-nh-emergency-shelter-info-safety-tips-and-more\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">has resources<\/a> for finding shelters and staying safe in the frigid weather.Warming centers were open across the state, with people encouraged to call 211 to find the nearest location, Gov. Mikie Sherrill announced an <a href=\"https:\/\/whyy.org\/articles\/philadelphia-snow-storm-updates-latest-forecast\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">emergency declaration<\/a> that went into effect for all 21 counties. Sherrill also announced a commercial vehicle travel restriction on interstate highways.Snow fell steadily across New Jersey on Sunday. Trenton had received more than 7 inches of snow by early afternoon, the <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NWS_MountHolly\/status\/2015496297764040746\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">NWS reported<\/a>.State offices were set to be closed Monday, and New Jersey Transit <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NJTRANSIT\/status\/2015213086274191581\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">temporarily suspended<\/a> bus, light rail and Access Link on Sunday.\u00a0Acting Attorney General Jennifer Davenport <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NewJerseyOAG\/status\/2015068214191927576\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">warned businesses<\/a> not to violate the state&#8217;s price gouging law during the snowstorm.New York<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NYSDHSES\/status\/2015404323211993117\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">State officials said<\/a> most of New York is expected to receive 1-2 feet of snow, while New York City and Long Island could get sleet.Gov. Kathy Hochul urged residents to stay indoors, layer to stay warm and check on their neighbors.The largest school district in the U.S. will hold remote classes on Monday.
