United States President Donald Trump has suggested that the Department of Justice (DOJ) is investigating the wealth of Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar as his administration grapples with the fallout from the killing of demonstrator Alex Pretti<\/a> in Minneapolis.<\/p>\n

The Republican president also said on Monday that he is sending his border czar, Tom Homan, to the state of Minnesota, which has been witnessing protests since federal immigration officers fatally shot Pretti, a 37-year-old nurse, there on Saturday morning.<\/p>\n

\u201cTom is tough but fair, and will report directly to me,\u201d Trump wrote in a social media post. \u201cSeparately, a major investigation is going on with respect to the massive 20 Billion Dollar, Plus, Welfare Fraud that has taken place in Minnesota, and is at least partially responsible for the violent organised protests going on in the streets.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAdditionally, the DOJ and Congress are looking at \u2018Congresswoman\u2019 Illhan Omar, who left Somalia with NOTHING, and is now reportedly worth more than 44 Million Dollars. Time will tell all.\u201d<\/p>\n

Omar\u2019s net worth has increased into the millions of dollars in recent years due to her husband\u2019s wealth. Omar serves in the US House of Representatives, representing Minnesota.<\/p>\n

Previously, Trump had publicly urged Attorney General Pam Bondi to open investigations into his political opponents<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Last week, Trump said Omar \u201cshould be investigated for Financial and Political Crimes, and that investigation should start, NOW\u201d.<\/p>\n

Omar, who is of Somali descent, is one of Trump\u2019s favourite targets, and he often deploys Islamophobic language to attack her.<\/p>\n

The Muslim American congresswoman has been a vocal critic of Trump\u2019s policies and rhetoric, including his attacks against the Somali community.<\/p>\n

After Trump attacked Omar and called the Somali community<\/a> \u201cgarbage\u201d last month, Omar accused him of having a \u201ccreepy\u201d obsession with her.<\/p>\n

\u201cI hope he gets the help he desperately needs,\u201d she said at the time.<\/p>\n

In recent months, Trump has been incessantly invoking Omar and the Somali community, seizing on a COVID 19-era welfare embezzlement scandal in Minnesota in which dozens of people, including some Somali immigrants, have been charged.<\/p>\n

Late last year, Trump mocked Omar\u2019s headscarf in one of his rants over Minnesota, saying she is \u201calways wrapped in her swaddling hijab\u201d.<\/p>\n

At the same time, the Trump administration launched an immigration crackdown in Minnesota that appeared to be targeting the state\u2019s sizeable Somali community.<\/p>\n

But immigration officers\u2019 aggressive tactics in the state have generated nationwide condemnation. Early this month, a federal officer fatally shot Renee Good<\/a>, a US citizen and a mother of three, as she tried to flee immigration agents who had surrounded her car.<\/p>\n

The Trump administration accused her of trying to ram the officer, but video footage cast doubt over that claim.<\/p>\n

Then came the killing of Pretti, who was shot multiple times after a tussle with immigration agents. The White House described the victim as a \u201cdomestic terrorist\u201d and said he was carrying a gun.<\/p>\n

But videos shot from multiple angles showed Pretti had a cellphone in one hand while their other hand was raised and empty before the shooting.<\/p>\n

The killings of both Good and Pretti took place in Minneapolis, part of which is represented by Omar.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am absolutely horrified that federal agents are targeting and executing our residents instead of protecting them,\u201d the congresswoman said in a statement on Saturday.<\/p>\n
