AP<\/p>\n<p>The female gray wolf belonged to the Junction Butte pack \u2014 arguably the most viewed and photographed wolf family, thanks to its proximity to Yellowstone\u2019s busy roads, officials said.<\/p>\n<p>After getting the signal from the tracker that the beloved lupine had died, investigators tried to find her carcass, but found nothing but her collar, which was severed and tossed into a tree, the activist group Large Carnivore Fund said.  <\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.49926794;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"38298012\" width=\"885\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/2019-file-photo-provided-national-14912547.jpg\" alt=\"A pack of wolves, with varying fur colors from light tan to dark brown, standing on a snow-covered field, casting long shadows.\" class=\"wp-image-38298012\"  \/>A pack of wolves, with varying fur colors from light tan to dark brown, standing on a snow-covered field. AP<\/p>\n<p>As they couldn\u2019t find  body, the officials believe that she was likely killed and taken away by poachers.<\/p>\n<p>The hit took place in Montana\u2019s Wolf Management Unit 313 \u2014 an area that had been <a href=\"https:\/\/fwp.mt.gov\/restrictions-and-closures\/news\/2025\/nov\/1115-notice-of-wolf-closure---wmu-313\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">closed<\/a> for hunting since Nov. 16 after the legal quota had already been met. <\/p>\n<p>Because the Junction Butte pack spends most of its time within the safety of the national park, the animals have little fear of humans. The Junction Butte pack had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DRfZV72CaQ8\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">15 members in its pack<\/a> in November, according to a wolf technician at the park. Of those 15, 13 were black wolves and 2 were gray wolves.<\/p>\n<p>There is a <a href=\"https:\/\/fwp.mt.gov\/homepage\/news\/2026\/jan\/0122-reward-increased-to-usd31k-for-information-on-wolf-killed-out-of-season\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$31,000 reward<\/a> for information leading to an arrest and conviction of whoever shot her.
