As Carrie Underwood returns<\/a> for her second season judging American Idol, producers are worried that half of America might not love her so much anymore, Rob Shuter reported in his Naughty But Nice But Nice<\/a> Substack.<\/p>\n

The country singer\u2019s decision to sing \u201cAmerica the Beautiful\u201d at President Donald Trump\u2019s inauguration has led to backlash<\/a> over her perceived politics, sources told Shuter for a post on Wednesday, January 28.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe show needs mass appeal,\u201d one source told Shuter. \u201cPolitics instantly split the audience, and that\u2019s the opposite of what Idol is built on.\u201d<\/p>\n

Underwood, 42, has kept her views close to the vest. \u201cI try to stay far out of politics if possible, at least in public, because nobody wins,\u201d the American Idol season 4 champion told The Guardian<\/a> in 2019. \u201cIt\u2019s crazy. Everybody tries to sum everything up and put a bow on it, like it\u2019s black and white. And it\u2019s not like that.\u201d<\/p>\n

But sources argued to Shuter that \u201csilence doesn\u2019t always read as neutrality\u201d in the current political climate and \u201cproducers are increasingly worried\u201d about continued speculation over where the mom of two stands.<\/p>\n

\u201cOnce viewers stop talking about contestants and start arguing about judges,\u201d a source noted, \u201cthe brand takes a hit.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another insider added, \u201cThe last thing producers want is a judge turning into a political lightning rod.\u201d<\/p>\n
