{"id":437618,"date":"2026-01-29T21:55:15","date_gmt":"2026-01-29T21:55:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/437618\/"},"modified":"2026-01-29T21:55:15","modified_gmt":"2026-01-29T21:55:15","slug":"a-brain-parasite-infecting-millions-is-far-less-sleepy-than-we-thought-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/437618\/","title":{"rendered":"A Brain Parasite Infecting Millions Is Far Less Sleepy Than We Thought : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A parasite that lives permanently in the brains of millions may not be as uniformly dormant as scientists once thought.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers at the University of California, Riverside (UCR) have recently found evidence of low-level T. gondii reactivation in the brains of mice, even during long-term infection.<\/p>\n<p>Today, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/parasite-infecting-up-to-50-of-people-can-decapitate-human-sperm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">more than a third<\/a> of the world&#8217;s human population is infected by Toxoplasma gondii, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/brain-invading-parasite-could-be-hacked-to-deliver-meds-in-your-head\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">brain-invading parasite<\/a> that reproduces in cats with mice and other animals acting as intermediate hosts.<\/p>\n<p>Though the pathogen often ends up in a healthy human, following <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/owning-a-cat-could-double-your-risk-of-schizophrenia-research-suggests+\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">contact with cat feces<\/a> or raw meat, infections typically cause no symptoms, meaning few are any the wiser.<\/p>\n<p>Unbeknownst to its host, the parasite creates cysts within the tissues of the human brain, heart, and muscle, where it can then reside for a lifetime \u2013 seemingly inactive until immune defenses falter.<\/p>\n<p>But something seems to be going on inside these cysts.<\/p>\n<p>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/cat-parasite-can-seriously-disrupt-brain-function-study-suggests\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cat Parasite Can Seriously Disrupt Brain Function, Study Suggests<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Until now, it was assumed that each tiny cyst contains but one single type of T. gondii that lies dormant. But researchers at UCR have used single-cell RNA sequencing to reveal several subtypes all hunkering down together in the brains of their test animals.<\/p>\n<p>In mice, at least, the parasite seems to cluster in up to five distinct forms. These various forms of T. gondii develop and grow in different ways and at different rates. After a few days of growth in the lab, some subtypes can even approach stages associated with renewed activity.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We found the cyst is not just a quiet hiding place \u2013 it&#8217;s an active hub with different parasite types geared toward survival, spread, or reactivation,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/news.ucr.edu\/articles\/2026\/01\/27\/scientists-find-hidden-diversity-inside-common-brain-parasite\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">explains<\/a> biomedical researcher Emma Wilson from UCR.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our work changes how we think about the Toxoplasma cyst,&#8221; she adds. &#8220;It reframes the cyst as the central control point of the parasite&#8217;s life cycle. It shows us where to aim new treatments. Dubey\/Wikimedia Commons\/Public Domain<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Toxoplasmosis\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Toxoplasmosis<\/a> is a disease caused by T. gondii in humans that can cause a flu-like illness with psychiatric symptoms.
