{"id":437944,"date":"2026-01-30T01:52:09","date_gmt":"2026-01-30T01:52:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/437944\/"},"modified":"2026-01-30T01:52:09","modified_gmt":"2026-01-30T01:52:09","slug":"scientists-discovered-a-city-sized-bulge-on-the-yellowstone-volcanos-north-rim","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/437944\/","title":{"rendered":"Scientists discovered a city-sized bulge on the Yellowstone volcano\u2019s north rim"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"JHNP2JEG6ZHXHAQ7MSRR6CE2FU\">A gigantic bulge in the north rim of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/nation\/2025\/07\/viral-videos-of-animals-fleeing-yellowstone-spark-supervolcano-fears.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Yellowstone caldera<\/a> is the latest sign of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/nation\/2024\/07\/dramatic-video-shows-yellowstone-geyser-explosion-that-sent-tourists-running.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">volcanic activity<\/a> in the national park.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"FUD37TJWEREGHKINCO5XUZ6JOQ\">Geologists call this type of bulge \u201cvolcanic uplift.\u201d It\u2019s often caused by the movement of magma or gas underground.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MLMHJSESGJDSRINMBBUBISAA6E\">Dubbed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/observatories\/yvo\/news\/its-baaaaaack-norris-uplift-anomaly\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Norris Uplift Anomaly<\/a> when it first appeared near the Norris Geyser Basin in 1996, the uplift disappeared after 2004.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"VPNUBP5HJZHUVCBCPOLFJ5OT4I\">In July 2025, the Norris Uplift returned \u2013 and is now the size of a major American city.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7DPI5TCLUVD5XOAGOHFJ2TX66M\">Measuring roughly 19 miles across, it \u201cis the size of Chicago,\u201d Michael Poland, Scientist-in-Charge at the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory told <a href=\"https:\/\/cowboystatedaily.com\/2026\/01\/25\/yellowstone-scientists-monitoring-chicago-sized-bulge-along-volcanos-north-rim\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Cowboy State Daily<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"L6C2XLRDIRBADCTECUSOKBYTCU\">In the observatory\u2019s monthly update, posted to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/programs\/VHP\/volcano-updates#yvo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">US Geological Survey website<\/a> on Jan. 2, scientists wrote that the \u201cmeasurements indicate subtle uplift along the north caldera rim that appears to have started in July.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"SOL4GTZY4ZELZLF2TEIBRUA4ZQ\">Calling a city-sized deformation \u201csubtle\u201d might seem like an understatement, but according to Poland, the phenomenon is hard to see from above ground.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LY74M7LVWFFCZK7IXOYPQK6QB4\">\u201cBetween July and the time the stations were collected in September,\u201d Poland wrote in Yellowstone Caldera Chronicles, a weekly blog produced by the observatory, \u201cthe ground rose by almost 2 centimeters (less than an inch).\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"V3FKESEDFJHTLLAUDJBJB7KECE\">A shift that small is hard to see with the human eye, but was captured by GPS monitoring sites and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/observatories\/yvo\/news\/insar-magic-deformation-camera-no-one-saw-coming\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">interferometric synthetic aperture radar<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>What does this mean for the Yellowstone supervolcano?<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"EHH7WYNBJBGZXGA5IRCH5OEWIE\">Nothing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"NQBEADYL4BG3DGPPC36V4GQFVE\">\u201cIs this a sign of an impending eruption, or some other hazard? No,\u201d Poland wrote in the blog post. \u201cRather, it is another example of Yellowstone\u2019s dynamic nature, and what we can learn about the characteristics of the subsurface using a new generation of sensitive monitoring tools.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MZUG7CC3SJDGVDT2N5COC2NE5M\">In the event of any future activity, we would have plenty of notice. Yellowstone is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/observatories\/yvo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">closely monitored<\/a> and signs of significant seismic disturbances would show up decades in advance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"YM6AS466T5GHJOZOTEXGCYSFR4\">According to Poland, \u201cthe current deformation is also minor in magnitude (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/observatories\/yvo\/news\/ground-deformation-yellowstone-how-does-it-compare-other-calderas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">it pales in comparison to deformation seen at other caldera systems<\/a>), and before any hazardous activity the deformation rates would accelerate dramatically \u2014 something that can obviously be tracked by the continuous GPS network.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Photographer on Grand Prismatic Spring with puffy clouds overhead in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming.\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/MW5PEZWUEBFW3MABOJGWPQIPBA.jpg\"  \/>Tourist taking photos on Grand Prismatic Spring  in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming.Getty ImagesIs Yellowstone dangerous?<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"DKW36CT3YRFUJJU5UARCVXRQMI\">Yes, like most areas with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/nation\/2024\/07\/dramatic-video-shows-yellowstone-geyser-explosion-that-sent-tourists-running.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">a lot of volcanic activity<\/a>, it can be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/nation\/2024\/07\/suv-drives-into-geyser-at-yellowstone-national-park.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">hazardous<\/a>. But not because of any immediate danger of a supereruption of the Yellowstone caldera.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"66Z3OCJJRRFEBLRFOP7HRI5YTY\">Fears about an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/nation\/2022\/12\/no-they-didnt-close-yellowstone-because-the-supervolcano-is-about-to-erupt.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">impending eruption of the supervolcano<\/a> that created Yellowstone have circulated online for years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"GIFNDLNCMRA4FNAZNWOBAKFTDQ\">Last summer, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/nation\/2025\/07\/viral-videos-of-animals-fleeing-yellowstone-spark-supervolcano-fears.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">videos of animals appearing to flee<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/nation\/2024\/07\/dramatic-video-shows-yellowstone-geyser-explosion-that-sent-tourists-running.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Yellowstone<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/search?q=yellowstone%20animals%20leaving%202025&amp;t=1752862952648\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">went viral<\/a>, leading to speculation that the park\u2019s infamous \u201csupervolcano\u201d was set to erupt. What the videos actually showed, though, were simply the natural migrations of animals in the park.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"5HT5US6NOZBORJFXB6JLD2VMLA\">Social media posts and misleading online videos often claim that the Yellowstone supervolcano is \u201coverdue\u201d for another catastrophic eruption, like the one that initially created its caldera about 0.63 million years ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"6XGOTJUHXVD3XJLGZX5JZUJL6U\">However, according to the USGS, that\u2019s simply not how most supervolcanoes work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZT2HDFGEWZCIPEUC23HM23GS4A\">\u201cMost volcanic systems that have a supereruption do not have them multiple times,\u201d the agency says in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/faqs\/yellowstone-overdue-eruption-when-will-yellowstone-erupt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">an online FAQ<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"54K5NGO5HRG4NMBPQEEK4BXDUQ\">That means that, while it\u2019s possible Yellowstone may see more volcanic activity in the future, it probably won\u2019t be on that scale again \u2014 and it\u2019s certainly not \u201coverdue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What is a supervolcano, anyway?<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"G4DQFEHVPVD27PVVC663N6W7EY\">The U.S. Geological Survey defines a supervolcano as \u201ca volcanic center that has had an eruption of magnitude 8 on the <a href=\"https:\/\/volcanoes.usgs.gov\/vsc\/glossary\/vei.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Volcano Explosivity Index<\/a> (VEI), meaning that at one point in time it erupted more than 1,000 cubic kilometers (240 cubic miles) of material.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"TYCVVPPK7JBUTIHAYFN75DZLME\">So, yes, the Yellowstone caldera was created by volcanic activity from a so-called supervolcano.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"Q2FNDQG3UJESBHFOICO7SQKXWE\">But, according to the USGS, it\u2019s a little complicated:<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"TSMP2GYE3RCM7HOTPW6FCSKABE\">\u201cThe largest eruption at Yellowstone was 2.1 million years ago and had a volume of 2,450 cubic kilometers.
