Organisms lacking hard shells and bones rarely get preserved in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/science\/animals\/a69948122\/evolution-clock\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:fossil record;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">fossil record<\/a>\u2014they\u2019re often erased (usually by powerful waves and storms) before the biological remains can fossilize.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">However, that\u2019s not the case with the Ediacara Biota\u2014Earth\u2019s earliest fossilized ecosystem of complex macroscopic organisms. Spotted across the globe, they\u2019ve puzzled scientists for generations simply because of their existence. While the uniquely shaped soft-bodied organisms should have been washed away, they have instead endured as part of the fossilized record.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThe Ediacara Biota look totally bizarre in their appearance,\u201d Lidya Tarhan, paleontologist at Yale University, said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geosociety.org\/GSA\/News\/pr\/2026\/GSA%20News%20Release%2026-01.aspx\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:statement;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">statement<\/a> from the Geological Society of America. \u201cSome of them have triradial symmetry, some have spiraling arms, some have fractal patterning. It\u2019s really hard when you first look at them to figure out where to place them in the tree of life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Scientists believe the Ediacara Biota existed tens of millions of years before the so-called Cambrian Explosion, a period that began about 539 million years ago and was characterized by a sharp increase in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/science\/animals\/a69897535\/biology-evolution-paradox-rule\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:diversity of animal life;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">diversity of animal life<\/a>. While scientists aren\u2019t sure what may have triggered the Cambrian Explosion\u2014theories range from a sudden event to a \u201clong fuse\u201d lead up, as Tarhan said\u2014the Ediacara Biota may help them decipher how Earth\u2019s ancient lifeforms began their great diversification.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Before mining clues from the fossils, scientists needed to know how they even formed to begin with. In a study <a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.geoscienceworld.org\/gsa\/geology\/article-abstract\/doi\/10.1130\/G53967.1\/723271\/Authigenic-clays-shaped-Ediacara-style-exceptional?redirectedFrom=fulltext\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:published;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">published<\/a> in the journal Geology, Tarhan\u2019s team described how they used chemical analysis to research <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/science\/environment\/a60513631\/fools-gold\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:lithium isotopes;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">lithium isotopes<\/a> from samples collected from both sandy and muddy sediments in Newfoundland, Canada. Results showed that certain clay particles were present in the sediment covering the organisms, providing a surface on which new clay could form, directly within the seafloor and around the already-buried organisms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Tarhan said that, in effect, the early clays acted like a natural cement, binding sand grains together and preserving detailed outlines and impressions of soft tissues within <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/science\/archaeology\/a64841127\/amateur-archaeologists-ancient-goddess\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:sandstone;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">sandstone<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThese results provide a broader view of potential drivers of the Ediacara-style fossil record and suggest that authigenic clay mineralization may have shaped multiple windows of exceptional fossilization across the Neoproterozoic-Paleozoic transition,\u201d the authors wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Prior theories suggested that Ediacara Biota fossils formed due to something unusual in the organism itself, whether that be the ability to resist chemical deterioration or simply having a body that was tougher than it looked.
