{"id":441468,"date":"2026-01-31T20:14:11","date_gmt":"2026-01-31T20:14:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/441468\/"},"modified":"2026-01-31T20:14:11","modified_gmt":"2026-01-31T20:14:11","slug":"carbon-dioxide-pulses-clears-toxins-from-parkinsons-brains-in-recent-study-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/441468\/","title":{"rendered":"Carbon Dioxide &#8216;Pulses&#8217; Clears Toxins From Parkinson&#8217;s Brains in Recent Study : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Manipulating how much carbon dioxide a person breathes can crank up the brain&#8217;s &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/discovery-points-to-a-sewage-system-for-the-brain-right-behind-our-nose\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sewage system<\/a>&#8216;, researchers have found.<\/p>\n<p>The proof-of-concept study, led by neuroscientists at the University of New Mexico (UNM) and The Mind Research Network in the US, offers a tantalizing possibility for a crucial clearance system that was only <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/researchers-have-now-watched-the-sewer-system-of-the-human-brain-in-action\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">identified in humans<\/a> in the last decade.<\/p>\n<p>The findings suggest that intermittently increasing CO2 levels in the blood could help flush toxic waste products out of the brain \u2013 maybe even preventing neurological diseases associated with these toxins, like  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/go\/IYl\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73029\" data-postid=\"189915\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">Parkinson&#8217;s<\/a> or  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/go\/IaO\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73015\" data-postid=\"189915\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">Alzheimer&#8217;s<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In recent experiments with healthy participants and people with Parkinson&#8217;s disease, researchers found that delivering rhythmic pulses of CO2-rich air for short periods improved the flow of their brain&#8217;s waste-clearance system.<\/p>\n<p>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/men-have-higher-risk-of-parkinsons-and-we-may-finally-know-why\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Men Have Higher Risk of Parkinson&#8217;s, And We May Finally Know Why<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Scientists aren&#8217;t yet sure why that happens, but fluctuating CO2 levels can cause blood vessels to dilate and constrict. This movement could be pushing along the nearby circulation of cerebrospinal fluid \u2013 the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/a-vital-fluid-protects-your-most-important-organ-what-happens-if-it-fails\" style=\"letter-spacing: -0.025em;\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">clear liquid<\/a> behind the glymphatic system that bathes our brain and spinal cord.<\/p>\n<p>Typically, as a person sleeps, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/hidden-waves-wash-fluid-through-the-brain-while-you-sleep\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hidden waves of cerebrospinal fluid<\/a> gradually flush waste material from their brain. But sleep issues are commonly seen in patients with Parkinson&#8217;s, possibly leading to a buildup of misfolded proteins.<\/p>\n<p>Cerebral blood flow also seems less adjustable in cases of Parkinson&#8217;s, and the brain typically contains greater concentrations of misfolded proteins with potentially toxic effects.<\/p>\n<p>As such, some researchers have hypothesized that the brain&#8217;s sewage system underlies the neurological disease.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1769890449_69_0.jpg\" alt=\"YouTube Thumbnail\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\" class=\"youtube-thumbnail-preview\" loading=\"lazy\"\/> frameborder=&#8221;0\u2033 allow=&#8221;accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share&#8221; referrerpolicy=&#8221;strict-origin-when-cross-origin&#8221; allowfullscreen&gt;<\/p>\n<p>Now, scientists want to figure out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/drug-that-induces-labor-shows-promise-as-alzheimers-treatment\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">how to manipulate the glymphatic system<\/a> to keep the brain fighting fit. Carbon dioxide could be a nifty way to do just that.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We brainstormed how we could boost this response,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/hscnews.unm.edu\/news\/researchers-study-whether-intentionally-manipulating-blood-carbon-dioxide-levels-might-enhance-brain-health\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a> neuropsychologist Sephira Ryman at UNM. &#8220;That is when we realized that we could reproduce, in the awake state, the glymphatic clearing response usually linked to deep sleep using intermittent CO2.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In experiments, 63 older adults, 30 of whom had Parkinson&#8217;s, underwent <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Blood-oxygenation-level%E2%80%93dependent_imaging\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">MRI-BOLD brain imaging<\/a> while breathing in cycles of brief CO\u2082 elevation for about 35 seconds, followed by normal air.<\/p>\n<p>This intervention, known as intermittent hypercapnia, temporarily increases blood CO\u2082 levels. In both healthy participants and those with Parkinson&#8217;s, it altered cerebrospinal fluid flow.<\/p>\n<p>In another experiment, involving 10 participants, 5 of whom had Parkinson&#8217;s, participants underwent three 10-minute sessions of intermittent hypercapnia. The levels of  CO\u2082  in their blood were then measured approximately 45, 90, and 150 minutes later.<\/p>\n<p>Both healthy participants and those with Parkinson&#8217;s showed increased cerebrospinal flow and glymphatic clearance. Waste products from the brain also increased in the blood, suggesting improved clearance.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/castingcall?utm_source=SA_website&amp;utm_medium=article&amp;utm_campaign=casting_call\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Mid-Article-Promos-Casting-Call-1-642x272.jpg\" alt=\"Audition now for ScienceAlert's Casting Call\" width=\"642\" height=\"272\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-189354 size-medium\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>One participant in the study showed evidence of amyloid-beta proteins in their blood, which is a biomarker of Alzheimer&#8217;s disease.
