In the middle of the New York Jets’ running back roster competition, one back has stepped away from the game.<\/p>\n

The Jets have placed Zach Evans on the reserve\/retired list.<\/p>\n

Evans spent last season on the Jets’ practice squad.<\/p>\n

The year before, he played in 10 games for the Rams and totaled 19 rushing yards.<\/p>\n

The Jets have a lot of RB depth, led by Breece Hall, Braelon Allen and Isaiah Davis.<\/p>\n

Evans is 24 years old and played his college ball between TCU and Ole Miss.<\/p>\n

He was a sixth-round draft choice by the Rams in 2023.<\/p>\n

At 5-foot-11, 211 pounds, Evans has always been a sturdy running back.<\/p>\n

He starred in his final college season, when he ran for 936 yards and nine touchdowns for Mississippi. He led the SEC with 6.5 yards per carry.<\/p>\n

In his college career, Evans averaged an absurd 6.9 yards per touch.<\/p>\n

At least for now, though, his football career is over.<\/p>\n

Placement on the reserve\/retired list means the Jets retain Evans’ rights. If he decided to make a comeback at some point, it’d be New York with the first crack at having him on their roster, if they still wanted him.<\/p>\n

But that placement, rather than being cut by the Jets, suggests Evans is ready for a new chapter, at least right now.<\/p>\n
