{"id":442864,"date":"2026-02-01T13:40:10","date_gmt":"2026-02-01T13:40:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/442864\/"},"modified":"2026-02-01T13:40:10","modified_gmt":"2026-02-01T13:40:10","slug":"a-bizarro-world-how-trumps-words-have-scrambled-americas-gun-politics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/442864\/","title":{"rendered":"A \u2018bizarro world\u2019: How Trump\u2019s words have scrambled America\u2019s gun politics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml2vauu2000x28qcdwfjalwx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In the wake of a horrific shooting that shocked the nation, President Donald Trump starkly broke with pro-gun groups in off-the-cuff remarks: \u201cTake the guns first, go through due process second,\u201d Trump said during a televised meeting with lawmakers.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml2vd9uy00053b6psfvlfvdp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That was nearly eight years ago \u2014 after a 2018 mass shooting at a high school in Parkland, Florida, where a gunman killed 17 people. Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2018\/02\/28\/politics\/gun-laws-donald-trump-congress\/index.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">floated stronger laws<\/a> for background checks and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2018\/02\/27\/politics\/guns-donald-trump-sarah-sanders-age-limit\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">raising the minimum age<\/a> to purchase certain firearms. But after the National Rifle Association and other gun-rights groups objected, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2018\/02\/26\/politics\/trump-gun-control\/index.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">he backed down<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml2vd9uy00063b6po2yka1fa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Last week, Trump once again put gun groups <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/01\/26\/politics\/second-amendment-minneapolis-trump-pretti-shooting-nra\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">on the defensive<\/a> when he said Minneapolis protester <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/01\/29\/us\/immigration-agents-shooting-alex-pretti-invs\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alex Pretti<\/a> should not have had a gun when he was fatally shot by federal agents.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml2vd9uy00073b6psa3hlnms@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cYou can\u2019t have guns. You can\u2019t walk in with guns. You just can\u2019t,\u201d Trump told reporters outside the White House, seeming to blame Pretti for having a gun on his waistband when he was shot and killed.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml2vd9uy00083b6pcx97inuu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Trump, who has called himself \u201cthe best friend gun owners have ever had in the White House,\u201d received <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/01\/27\/politics\/gun-alex-pretti-ice-nra\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a swift rebuke<\/a> from gun-rights advocates, who argued that Pretti had a clear Second Amendment right to protest while carrying a gun. Some groups criticized the president outright, while the NRA, the biggest gun-rights group in the US, didn\u2019t mention the president or his comments directly.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml2vd9uy00093b6pno8nwyid@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe NRA unequivocally believes that all law-abiding citizens have a right to keep and bear arms anywhere they have a legal right to be,\u201d the NRA wrote on X last week.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml2vd9uy000a3b6p6qb7wymi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Trump\u2019s comments were all the more notable because they came after pushback from pro-gun groups against top Trump officials, including FBI Director Kash Patel and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, who suggested in the immediate aftermath that Pretti was a threat because he had a gun.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml2vd9uy000b3b6p2gv3e5do@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It was just the latest instance in which the president\u2019s actions and rhetoric have put him at odds with gun-rights groups \u2014 even if his administration\u2019s record is largely on the side of gun rights \u2014 scrambling the politics over firearms and sometimes creating strange bedfellows.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml2vd9uy000c3b6pkjoz1t3s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cTrump has always been a bit of a moving target when it comes to gun rights,\u201d said Rob Doar, president of the Minnesota Gun Owners Law Center, who has pushed back against Trump officials\u2019 claims that Pretti was violating Minnesota law by carrying a gun.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml2vd9uy000d3b6p1tll5m6e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI think advocates are always a little bit tepid to trusting Trump as a strong mouthpiece for the Second Amendment. The NRA is no longer the lobbying powerhouse it once was, having been weakened by financial scandals and years of internal conflict that led to the 2024 resignation of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/01\/05\/us\/wayne-lapierre-nra-resigns\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">President Wayne LaPierre<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml2vd9uy000h3b6ppbk2u2rg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A Republican strategist who works directly with multiple lawmakers on Capitol Hill described the NRA\u2019s self-insertion in the conversation around Pretti\u2019s shooting as the organization\u2019s attempt to stay relevant.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml2vd9uy000i3b6pkvtcfrzm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI have not heard of the NRA calling lawmakers to get them to lobby the White House\u201d over Trump\u2019s remarks following the shooting, the strategist said. \u201cThey just don\u2019t have the juice they used to.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml2vd9uy000j3b6pd5myzg37@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A White House official told CNN the NRA\u2019s pushback caught their attention and that the administration has been in direct contact with the group in the aftermath of the shooting.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml2vd9uy000k3b6poyicnh1s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said last week that Trump \u201csupports the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding American citizens. Absolutely.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml2vd9uy000l3b6p7zb6r3t6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWhile Americans have a constitutional right to bear arms, Americans do not have a constitutional right to impede lawful immigration enforcement operations,\u201d Leavitt said.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/gettyimages-2258349318.jpg\" alt=\"White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt speaks during a news briefing on January 26.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"3830\" width=\"5745\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml2vd9uy000n3b6p0y7922jb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Of course, pro-gun groups still have plenty of influence in the Trump administration, which they\u2019ve flexed knocking down several proposals over the past year \u2014 including some opposed by liberal groups.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml2vd9uy000o3b6phbh5w4gd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Trump has reversed Biden-era gun regulations and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/06\/03\/health\/gun-violence-prevention-funding-kff-health-news\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cut funding<\/a> for gun-violence research over the past year, but the Trump administration also crossed gun-rights groups with a proposal to merge the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives into the Drug Enforcement Administration.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml2vd9uy000p3b6peo7wzapp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Pro-gun groups feared such a move would empower the agency\u2019s gun-related efforts, not weaken them, and the idea was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/01\/17\/politics\/trump-plan-merge-atf-dea-quietly-abandoned\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">quietly abandoned<\/a>. (Gun-control advocates also opposed the move for fear it would sideline the agency.)\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml2vd9uy000q3b6pvnu3wolq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Last fall, when CNN and others reported that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/09\/04\/politics\/transgender-firearms-justice-department-second-amendment\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Justice Department was considering<\/a> whether it could restrict the ability of transgender Americans from buying guns, both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/09\/05\/politics\/nra-transgender-gun-control\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the NRA<\/a> and the LGBTQ-rights group Human Rights Campaign opposed the idea.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml2vd9uy000r3b6psmzw8t20@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And while Trump officials and Republicans rushed to cast blame on Pretti \u2014 even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/01\/24\/us\/invs-videos-show-federal-officer-recovered-gun\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">as video evidence<\/a> contradicted them \u2014 Democrats defended his right to carry a gun at a protest under Minnesota law.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml2vd9uy000s3b6peab794g3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt feels like we\u2019re in a bizarro world,\u201d said University of California, Los Angeles, law professor Adam Winkler, an expert on constitutional law and the Second Amendment. \u201cRepublicans are saying, \u2018Don\u2019t bring your guns to protests,\u2019 after 10 years of saying, \u2018Of course you can bring guns to protests.\u2019 And many liberals saying, \u2018You have a right to bring a gun to protest,\u2019 even though they\u2019ve been saying for years it would be irresponsible to bring a gun to a protest.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml2vd9uy000t3b6pbcc0zn88@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Some Republicans have relished the fact that gun-control advocates like Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom are defending Pretti\u2019s right to protest while carrying a gun. Newsom, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GavinNewsom\/status\/2015475599075385766\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">who accused<\/a> the Trump administration of not believing in the Second Amendment, has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/09\/27\/us\/california-gun-tax-gavin-newsom\/index.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">signed legislation in California<\/a> restricting where guns can be legally carried (though a federal appellate court ruled against California\u2019s gun control laws <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/01\/03\/us\/california-ban-openly-carrying-gun-unconstitutional-hnk\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">last month<\/a>).\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml2vd9uy000u3b6pmgguzm2f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt\u2019s been great to watch all these Democrats crying out for run rights,\u201d one Republican congressman told CNN with a smirk.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml2vd9uy000v3b6pievpjst6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Kris Brown, president of Brady, a gun violence prevention group, acknowledged that the politics of the fatal shooting in Minnesota were \u201ca little bit upside-down.\u201d But she argued Pretti\u2019s killing pierced the NRA\u2019s narrative that guns are a \u201crisk-free value proposition\u201d \u2014 and its long-held warnings that Democratic administrations would trample on the rights of gun owners.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml2vd9uy000w3b6p3e9p3tym@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe reality here is the NRA also warned gun owners for years and years about \u2018jack-booted thugs\u2019 coming for their guns,\u201d Brown said. \u201cIt turns out they were right \u2014 it\u2019s just ICE, as currently deployed, is going after the people with the firearms and apparently shooting them for it.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/ap26029178111851a.JPG\" alt=\"Law enforcement officers prepare to make arrests after declaring an unlawful assembly during a protest in Minneapolis on January 28.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"2000\" width=\"3000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml2vd9uy000y3b6p1yulmmpj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When Trump first ran for president, the NRA was considered one of the strongest lobbying forces in Washington. During the 2016 campaign season \u2014 when the balance of the Supreme Court was at stake \u2014 the NRA spent $50 million on independent expenditures, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/news\/2017\/11\/audit-shows-nra-spending-surged-100-million-amidst-pro-trump-push-in-2016\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">more than $30 million<\/a> on Trump\u2019s campaign, according to data from the Center for Responsive Politics.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml2vd9uy000z3b6p02m0obho@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Today, not only does the NRA wield less power, it spends less money. In the 2024 election cycle, the group spent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/orgs\/national-rifle-assn\/summary?topnumcycle=2024&amp;toprecipcycle=2024&amp;contribcycle=2024&amp;lobcycle=2024&amp;id=d000000082&amp;outspendcycle=2016\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">just $10 million<\/a> on independent expenditures, according to the CRP.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml2vd9uy00103b6pv59w1vua@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe NRA is still the largest gun-rights group in the country, but they\u2019re significantly smaller than they used to be,\u201d said Stephen Gutowski, founder and editor of The Reload, a news site focused on firearms. \u201cIt\u2019s not clear exactly how much behind-the-scenes influence they have with the White House.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml2vd9uy00113b6pss8z7y81@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A MAGA-aligned Republican operative told CNN the NRA is among many \u201clegacy GOP groups\u201d that no longer hold the same sway in Washington.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml2vd9uy00123b6pv73gskfd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Another Republican adviser said the NRA had lost power after the scandals and noted there are more organizations in the gun space now. \u201cThe National Sportsman Shooting Foundation and Gun Owners of America have filled the void and grown in credibility,\u201d the adviser said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml2vd9uy00133b6p412nhjy7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The NRA did not respond to a request for comment.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml2vd9uy00143b6pi9bxp0h2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While the gun lobby is more diffuse in Washington, the issue still animates Trump\u2019s MAGA base.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml2vd9uy00153b6pnxvx6nsj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe gun lobby has been weakened because the NRA no longer has the resources to play the dominant role in elections the way it has in recent decades,\u201d Winkler said. \u201cBut it\u2019s also the strength of the gun-rights movement that has never been solely or primarily a function of the NRA. (The measure was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/06\/14\/politics\/supreme-court-bump-stocks\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ruled unconstitutional<\/a> by the Supreme Court in 2024.)\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml2vd9uy00193b6px9bnneeq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The year after the Parkland mass shooting, Trump again floated expanded background checks, suggesting the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/08\/09\/politics\/trump-nra-comments-background-checks\/index.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NRA would come around<\/a> on the issue. And there was great pressure on me having to do with guns. We did nothing. We didn\u2019t yield,\u201d Trump said in February 2024 at an NRA expo.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml2vd9uy001c3b6ph16wluco@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In the second Trump administration, gun-rights advocates say the administration has been quite supportive. They point to his appointees like Harmeet Dhillon at the Justice Department\u2019s Civil Rights Division, and provisions in Trump\u2019s \u201cBig Beautiful Bill\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/07\/04\/politics\/seven-little-pieces-trump-agenda-bill\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">to cut fees<\/a> on some firearms equipment like silencers.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml2vd9uy001d3b6preeimzbg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            There also has been some friction over steps the Trump administration has taken. Gutowski <a href=\"https:\/\/thereload.com\/gun-rights-groups-chafe-at-dc-takeover-tactics-gun-arrests\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">wrote last August<\/a> about objections from gun-rights groups over the deployment of dozens of ATF agents in Washington, DC, as part of Trump\u2019s law enforcement crackdown in the city.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml2vd9uy001e3b6pcg2owekj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But Robert Spitzer, a professor at the State University of New York at Cortland and author of several books on guns and politics, said Trump\u2019s splits with pro-gun groups tend to be short-lived, even if his latest comments about the Minnesota shooting are particularly notable.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cml2vd9uy001f3b6p1br1qawc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cHis instincts aren\u2019t necessarily with the gun-rights people, but the people that are running the relevant agencies and departments are the gun people,\u201d Spitzer said. \u201cI think in the long term, he\u2019s not going to really have any problems with the gun-rights side.
