As a result, researchers will one day be able to measure the delay between these ghostly images to offer an unprecedented constraint on the expansion rate of the universe \u2014 a problem that has long bedeviled scientists, as the universe appears to be expanding at different rates depending on where they look.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><a href=\"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-2037-4619%20https:\/\/jwst-venus.github.io\/about.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Conor Larison;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Conor Larison<\/a>, a postdoctoral researcher at the Space Telescope Science Institute, presented the discovery of the two gravitationally lensed supernovas, named SN Ares and SN Athena, at a news conference at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/live\/nss3zNi5SYA?si=M-SLNU2C--q5nFcT\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:247th meeting of the American Astronomical Society;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">247th meeting of the American Astronomical Society<\/a> in Phoenix.<\/p>\n<p>Cosmic magnifying glasses reveal the invisible<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">These supernova observations are among the first results from the Vast Exploration for Nascent, Unexplored Sources (VENUS) treasury program. It occurs when a massive celestial object, like a galaxy cluster, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/james-webb-telescope-zooms-bizarre-180510002.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:bends the light;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bends the light<\/a> from a more distant source that&#8217;s located behind it, thus magnifying the object.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;Strong gravitational lensing transforms galaxy clusters into nature&#8217;s most powerful telescopes,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.astro.utoronto.ca\/people\/faculty\/name\/seiji-fujimoto\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Seiji Fujimoto;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Seiji Fujimoto<\/a>, principal investigator of the VENUS program and an astrophysicist at the University of Toronto, said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/jwst-venus.github.io\/news\/news_20260107.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:statement;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">statement<\/a>. &#8220;VENUS was designed to maximally find the rarest events in the distant Universe, and these lensed [supernovas] are exactly the kind of phenomena that only this approach can reveal.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">SN Ares is the first lensed supernova discovered via the VENUS program. The explosion occurred almost 10 billion years ago, when the universe was around one-third its current age. The warp in space-time caused by a foreground galaxy cluster, MJ0308, split the light from SN Ares into three images.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">One image has already reached our telescopes. But the light from the other two images passes much closer to the massive center of MJ0308, so it experiences a much greater slowdown due to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/what-is-time-dilation\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:gravitational time dilation;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">gravitational time dilation<\/a>. Therefore, the other two images of SN Ares will arrive in approximately 60 years \u2014 an unprecedented delay.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;Such a long anticipated delay between images of a strongly lensed supernova has never been seen before and could be the chance for a predictive experiment that could put unbelievably precise constraints on cosmological evolution,&#8221; Larison said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/jwst-venus.github.io\/news\/news_20260107.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:statement;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In the meantime, a delayed image of SN Athena, which erupted as a supernova when the universe was about half its current age, is anticipated to arrive in the next one to two years. Although it won&#8217;t be as cosmologically precise as its mythological half brother Ares, Athena will reveal how accurate our predictive powers have become.<\/p>\n<p>A sorely needed natural experiment<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The predicted reappearance of these supernovas, compared with their actual arrival times in the future, will provide precise constraints on the expansion rate of the universe, a value known as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/hubble-constant.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Hubble constant;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Hubble constant<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Curiously, when cosmologists measure the Hubble constant, they obtain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/cosmology\/james-webb-telescope-confirms-huge-crisis-in-our-understanding-of-cosmic-expansion\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:different values;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">different values<\/a> based on the measurement method \u2014 a disparity known as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/universe-may-revolve-once-every-010700794.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Hubble tension;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hubble tension<\/a>. Calculations based on the cosmic microwave background \u2014 the oldest light in the universe, emitted when the cosmos was only 380,000 years old \u2014 yield a universal expansion rate of 67 kilometers per second per megaparsec.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Yet calculations based on the Hubble Space Telescope&#8217;s observations of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/unexpected-behavior-pulsing-stars-could-100000917.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:pulsating Cepheid stars;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pulsating Cepheid stars<\/a>, used as &#8220;standard candles&#8221; for their specific luminosity patterns, yield a value of 73 kilometers per second per megaparsec.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Within the observable sphere of the cosmos, the delayed images from SN Ares and SN Athena may help reconcile the Hubble tension.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;If we can measure the difference in when these images arrive, we recover a measurement of the physical scale of the lensing system which spans the Universe between the supernova and us here on Earth,&#8221; Larison told Live Science via email. &#8220;Any distance measurement we can make like this in the Universe tells us how the Universe has been evolving over cosmic time, as these distances directly depend on this evolution.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Equally importantly, the lensed supernovas allow astronomers to make this measurement in a &#8220;single, self-consistent step,&#8221; Larison added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The time delays from these supernovas also allow an independent measurement method \u2014 unrelated to the cosmic microwave background or standard candles like Cepheid stars \u2014 at a time when such a measurement is &#8220;sorely needed&#8221; to test &#8220;possible unknown systematics\u201d governing cosmological expansion.<\/p>\n<p>From Big Bang to big mystery<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Coincidentally, 60 years have passed since the first formal suggestion to use lensed supernovas as a tool to explore the universe&#8217;s expansion. However, <a href=\"https:\/\/ui.adsabs.harvard.edu\/abs\/2025arXiv251000923K\/abstract\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:fewer than 10 such supernovas;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">fewer than 10 such supernovas<\/a> had been discovered before the VENUS program observations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;Since VENUS started last July, we have discovered 8 new lensed supernovae over 43 observations, almost doubling the known sample in a remarkably fast time frame,&#8221; Larison told Live Science. &#8220;It seems that, although lensed supernovae are certainly rare, the real limitation has been in observing capabilities. If it is, then the current expansion of the cosmos could one day become a contraction, having profound consequences on the ultimate fate of the universe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Ultimately, SN Ares and SN Athena may hint at the potential <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/universe-die-090000455.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:death of the universe;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">death of the universe<\/a> and whether it ends with a roar or a whimper \u2014 will the cosmos collapse in a Big Crunch, or expand indefinitely into the thin, cold darkness of a Big Freeze?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission.
