CHARLOTTE, N.C. \u2014\u00a0As some North Carolinians dig out their cars and driveways, others are catching some air and having fun in the snow. Like many children in the state, Bau and Ellis Hostetter have never seen snow like this before.<\/p>\n

Over the weekend,\u00a0Charlotte got a record-breaking 11 inches of snow

If you go sledding,\u00a0\u00a0it’s important to remember to wear layers, chose an open area with minimal trees and wear a helmet for protection<\/p>\n
\u201cTotally surprised. We’ve only seen, you know, an inch or two here and mostly ice. So excited for the boys to see this heavy, like, very fluffy snow,\u201d said their mother, Tara Beth Hostetter.<\/p>\n
On the other side of the hill, Ethan Connolly of Charlotte traded in a sled for his snowboard.<\/p>\n
\u201cJust fun to just go down the hill on your feet. Well, I don’t like sitting on my butt and going. I like going on my feet,\u201d Connolly said.<\/p>\n
Most of North Carolina got slammed with snow this past weekend, and Charlotte got a record-breaking 11 inches, with other parts of the state getting more.\u00a0With all this snow, if you go sledding, it’s important to remember to wear layers, chose an open area with minimal trees and wear a helmet for protection.<\/p>\n
\u201cSledding is one of these things where you can get a lot of speed. You don’t really have good control of your body or the ability to slow down. So, if you have obstacles at the bottom of the hill or even obstacles on the way down, those can be particularly dangerous,\u201d said Dr. Luke Helff, medical director at Levine Brenner Children’s Hospital.<\/p>\n
Some parents were glad to be able to share the joy of snow with their children.<\/p>\n
\u201cI grew up in upstate New York in Binghamton and so this was kind of a regular thing for us, but for my son to come out and experience almost a foot of snow in Charlotte is kind of crazy but i\u2019m happy for him,\u201d said Matt Connolly, Ethan\u2019s father.<\/p>\n
