{"id":447064,"date":"2026-02-03T19:11:11","date_gmt":"2026-02-03T19:11:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/447064\/"},"modified":"2026-02-03T19:11:11","modified_gmt":"2026-02-03T19:11:11","slug":"zombie-remnants-of-covid-19-hunt-in-packs-and-kill-our-immune-cells-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/447064\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Zombie&#8217; Remnants of COVID-19 Hunt In Packs And Kill Our Immune Cells : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8216;Zombie&#8217;  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/coronavirus\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73041\" data-postid=\"190898\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">coronavirus<\/a> fragments not only <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ucla.edu\/releases\/viral-protein-fragments-behind-serious-covid-19-outcomes\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">help drive inflammation<\/a> in long-COVID, but also destroy our immune cells.<\/p>\n<p>A recent study by an international team of more than 30 authors reveals how the destruction of the  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/virus\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73053\" data-postid=\"190898\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">virus<\/a> within our body leaves dangerous protein fragments that target specific immune cells, which may explain some of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/life-with-long-covid-comparable-to-parkinsons-and-stroke\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">debilitating consequences<\/a> millions of people with long-COVID <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/chronic-fatigue-syndrome-has-surged-since-the-pandemic-study-reveals\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">now face<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These fragments target a specific kind of curvature on the membranes of cells,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ucla.edu\/releases\/covid-19-viral-fragments-target-kill-specific-immune-cells\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">explains<\/a> bioengineer Gerard Wong from the University of California, Los Angeles. &#8220;Cells that are spiky, that are star-shaped, or that have lots of tentacles end up getting preferentially suppressed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>These &#8220;spiky&#8221; cells include early-warning <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Plasmacytoid_dendritic_cell\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dendritic cells<\/a> that detect and alert the rest of the body to  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/virus\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73053\" data-postid=\"190898\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">viruses<\/a>, as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cytotoxic_T_cell\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CD8+<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Helper_T_cell\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CD4+ T cells<\/a> that help destroy already infected cells.<\/p>\n<p>Previous research already noted this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/long-covid-seems-to-make-distinct-changes-to-the-immune-system\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">T cell depletion<\/a>, which has since been recognized as a plausible diagnostic tool.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Viruses do so many things that we don&#8217;t understand,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ucla.edu\/releases\/covid-19-viral-fragments-target-kill-specific-immune-cells\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a> Wong. &#8220;We want to understand what all the leftover viral matter does to us, both during COVID and after. With these viral fragments, all of a sudden there&#8217;s a whole new range of possibilities to consider.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1763349968_17_0.jpg\" alt=\"YouTube Thumbnail\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\" class=\"youtube-thumbnail-preview\" loading=\"lazy\"\/> frameborder=&#8221;0\u2033 allow=&#8221;accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share&#8221; referrerpolicy=&#8221;strict-origin-when-cross-origin&#8221; allowfullscreen&gt;<\/p>\n<p>The fact that multiple types of these viral fragments can attack immune cells may explain why those with preexisting immune conditions are more susceptible to these impacts, even when they are otherwise healthy.<\/p>\n<p>In further verification, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/new-viral-variant-evolved-inside-man-with-record-covid-infection\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Omicron strain<\/a> of  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/coronavirus\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73041\" data-postid=\"190898\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">COVID-19<\/a>, infamous for being highly infectious but less dangerous, breaks down into a greater variety of protein fragments in our bodies than previous strains.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;No one could really explain why it replicated as fast as the original strain but generally did not cause infections that were as serious,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ucla.edu\/releases\/covid-19-viral-fragments-target-kill-specific-immune-cells\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">explains<\/a> Yue Zhang, a bioengineer at China&#8217;s Westlake University.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We found that pieces of the Omicron spike were much less able to kill these important immune cells \u2013 suggesting that a patient&#8217;s immune system is not going to be as depleted.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/newsletter?utm_source=promo_octopus_yellow\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Octopus-yellow-final-642x272.jpg\" alt=\"Subscribe to ScienceAlert's free fact-checked newsletter\" width=\"642\" height=\"272\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-190927 size-medium\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Despite the rhetoric of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/europe\/emergencies\/situations\/covid-19\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pandemic being a thing of the past<\/a>, COVID-19 continues to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/healthsecurity\/transmission\/2026\/01\/07\/covid-19-still-claims-more-than-100000-us-lives-each-year\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">kill about 100,000 people<\/a> in the US annually and disable many more. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/covid-19\/as-recommendations-for-isolation-end-how-common-is-long-covid\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Up to 17 million<\/a> people in the US had long COVID in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/strange-structures-found-lurking-in-the-blood-of-people-with-long-covid\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Strange Structures Found Lurking in The Blood of People With Long COVID<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Amid this backdrop, many have been left struggling without adequate support for the ongoing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/long-covid-patients-are-far-more-likely-to-have-multiple-organ-abnormalities\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">consequences<\/a> of long COVID, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/covids-hidden-toll-full-body-scans-reveal-long-term-immune-effects\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">are very real and debilitating<\/a>. What&#8217;s more, <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/S1473-3099(25)00476-1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">recent studies found<\/a> that the risk of long COVID can increase with subsequent infections in children and <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/7322188\/covid-reinfection-long-covid\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">adults<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;One of the strongest reasons I give patients, families, and physicians about getting vaccinated: More vaccines should lead to fewer infections, which should lead to less long COVID,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pennmedicine.org\/news\/second-infection-in-kids-doubles-long-covid-risk\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">urged<\/a> pediatrician Ravi Jhaveri of Lurie Children&#8217;s Hospital in Chicago last September.<\/p>\n<p>This research was published by <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1073\/pnas.2521841122\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">PNAS<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"&#8216;Zombie&#8217; coronavirus fragments not only help drive inflammation in long-COVID, but also destroy our immune cells.
