{"id":447287,"date":"2026-02-03T21:42:07","date_gmt":"2026-02-03T21:42:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/447287\/"},"modified":"2026-02-03T21:42:07","modified_gmt":"2026-02-03T21:42:07","slug":"liv-golf-hits-out-despite-being-awarded-world-ranking-points-by-owgr-amid-changing-landscape","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/447287\/","title":{"rendered":"LIV Golf hits out despite being awarded world ranking points by OWGR amid &#8216;changing landscape&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Trevor Immelman, the 2008 Masters champion and chairman of OWGR said the seven months since LIV last applied for ranking points had been &#8220;an incredibly complex and challenging process&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">He added: &#8220;We fully recognised the need to rank the top men&#8217;s players in the world but at the same time had to find a way of doing so that was equitable to the thousands of other players competing on other tours that operate with established meritocratic pathways.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;We believe we have found a solution that achieves these twin aims and enables the best-performing players at LIV Golf events to receive OWGR points.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The winner of this week&#8217;s opening event of the LIV Golf season is projected to receive 23.03 OWGR points, which is similar to European DP World Tour events (25).<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The victor at this week&#8217;s PGA Tour event &#8211; the WM Phoenix Open &#8211; is expected to receive 59 points.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The winner of a PGA Tour signature event earns 66 points, while the FedEx Cup play-off events at the end of the season &#8211; with reduced fields and no cuts &#8211; will see 37 points awarded to the winner.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The points on offer to LIV golfers means players will need a sustained run of top finishes to make any meaningful move up the world rankings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">OWGR points are important to players because they are crucial in qualifying for the annual four majors. The rankings are worked out via a two-year rolling system with more weight given to the most recent results.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">England&#8217;s Tyrrell Hatton and American Bryson DeChambeau are, at 22nd and 33rd respectively, the only LIV players in the world&#8217;s top 50, with five others among the top 100, including Jon Rahm at 97th.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Two-time US Open champion DeChambeau, and US Open and Masters winner Rahm have exemptions to continue playing for the sport&#8217;s biggest prizes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In recent weeks, five-times major winner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/sport\/golf\/articles\/czrkz7j7kn6o\" class=\"ssrcss-ckhpdl-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brooks Koepka<\/a> and 2018 Masters champion <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/sport\/golf\/articles\/c07xye18ndyo\" class=\"ssrcss-ckhpdl-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Patrick Reed<\/a> have been two of the biggest stars to leave LIV in favour of a return to the PGA Tour.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Trevor Immelman, the 2008 Masters champion and chairman of OWGR said the seven months since LIV last applied&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":447288,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[71],"tags":[427,99],"class_list":{"0":"post-447287","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-golf","8":"tag-golf","9":"tag-sports"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/447287","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=447287"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/447287\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/447288"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=447287"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=447287"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=447287"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
